Hands on hatching and help

He's still got a lot of time left. Just give him time and he should absorb the yolk. He probably would have taken at least another full day to hatch if he had pipped correctly - he likely would have internally pipped, waited 24 hours, externally pipped, waited another 24-ish hours, and then finished up. So he may have quite a bit of absorbing time left ahead of him, maybe a full day or more.

Ok that's what I was thinking as well. I was just worried after removing the top of the shell that it wouldn't absorb right. How often should I add vaseline?

It should still absorb fine :) I once had a duckling that hatched before her yolk absorbed - fully zipped and came out of the shell on her own and everything. I was like "nope" and pushed her back in and stood the egg on end (the downward pressure of their bodies against the yolk can sometimes help them absorb it faster, I've been told) and within a few hours she finished up and was fine.

I'm not sure how often it would be drying out - maybe every four hours or so? Or if it starts to look dry. Someone else might know the timing on that better than me, I've never had to apply Vaseline for an extended period of time.

Oh that's a relief. Maybe I should cut out an egg carton and place it in there upright. I'll just keep an eye on the membrane and reapply as needed. :) thanks again for responding so quick. I was really worried. :)

Baby pictures.

Any advice would be appreciated guys. I had some eggs under a broody that are on day 19/20. Two eggs had half the shell missing with membrane exposed but they're alive. I lightly covered the exposed membrane in vaseline and put them in my incubator and raised the humidity. The membrane is opaque now from the vaseline and I can see the chicks. I don't know what to do. I'm afraid to help them out, but i'm afraid to leave them in since they're officially due Friday. What to do?

Any idea how the shell got removed? The broody go nuts?

A pic would help, but I think I would be inclined to wait before helping, since its still early. Any chance your dates are off? Broodies are usually better than machines at being "on time".

This broody silkie hen is the stupidest ever. I told you earlier she had pooped all over the eggs, now this has happened. Great mom but terrible sitter.

Holy moly! I really don't know what to say, except dont be too hopeful. IF you could find the beak, if its in position to pip, you might be able to make a slit for it to breathe, then let it rest and absorb the yolk. There's no way for it to pip with a loose membrane like that, so I would expect it to suffocate, without a hole being made for it.

Just progress slowly with them... And good luck

Lock down has begun. 99.9 degrees and 75 humidity??

:fl I really hope you have some hatch out of this. You deserve some good luck.

Yep, I'm between a rock and a hard place with this situation. I'll never find the beak without breaking the membrane. Uhhh! I've been doing this for my many years but this is definitely a first.
