i think. Im soo excited!

Just make sure you check it in ice water. I bought 5 and 4 were off by 2 degrees F, some high, some low.

Best and cheapest and most accurate thermometer is for fish aquariums not the tape the floater . Tropical fish are affected by slight temperature changes so tank thermometers are very accurate . One of the best for checking other thermometers . Here Wal-Mart 3 dollars the glass tube with weights in the bottom .

I've heard the hygrometers for the reptiles are awesome too and pretty cheap.

What you should do is give it some JD so it won't know it's hurt ;) :frow

Lol

Do you have a link to an audio/video of the hen clucking at hatching chicks? I figure there's one here somewhere on BYC, I just don't know where...

No. I only use videos of chicks cheeping.

I need help on my current hatch, I posted a thread but I've got no responses and I'm on day 23 so I really could use advise!! One pipped but that's it. The other 7 aren't doing anything and I just checked them days ago and they were fine

Today has been the worst day! Some stray German shepherd found its way into our yard and killed our favorite silkie fabio. All of us have spent the morning crying. My husband is outside reinforcing the fence. :(

Neighbors who let their dogs roam suck, I'm sorry. Have you contacted the owner? I would, and warn them the next time it shows up it'll be shot (even if you don't intend to follow through, it will make them think twice). I had a horrible neighbor who kept letting their lab/shepherd mix attack and kill my birds.

I only mention contacting the owner because it probably wasn't a stray if it just killed your rooster. Strays and predators kill to eat and it would have eaten him. Pets kill for fun and leave the body.

There are probably dog laws in your area too - I would call and alert the dog warden so if it is a stray they will come and pick it up, and if it's not they may be able to figure out who the owner is provided the dog is registered and give them a warning.

We had to have our 14 year old dog put to sleep yesterday morning. I miss him and I worry without his presence we're going to start seeing a lot more of my other neighbor's annoying dogs. They already come onto half of our property and bark at us. They do run away when challenged though, at least, and haven't bothered my birds yet.

What incubator are you using? How are your temperatures? Still air or forced? Have you calibrated your thermometer? How long has the one that pipped been pipped for?

Sorry for the 20 questions but more info will help us help you :)

Quick edit, I read your other thread and will paste it here for others to see:

Today is supposed to be day 23 of incubation and one chick pipped about 4 hours ago but hasn't done anything since. I have kept the temperature at 98 degrees (minus a few times when the alarm went off to let me know it got a little low). The humidity was at 55-60 percent until the last few days and I've had it at 65 percent. I have an automatic turner and took them out of the turner to put the eggs on their side 3 days ago (I know, a little late). I took them out to check viability on day 18 and they were all moving and doing great. Now I don't know what to do!!! Only one pipped and then nothing, no peeping or anything and the rest haven't done a thing. What should I do?

Firstly your temp is low. If you are running forced air it should have been at 99.5 degrees the entire time, making your temp a full degree and a half low. If still air, you are three and a half degrees low since the temp should be 101.5 measured at the top of the eggs for still air. These low temperatures could certainly cause your late hatch. Your humidity also has been a little high. Personally I incubate at 30-40% humidity for the first 18 days and no higher or my chicks drown in the shell. Unless they're bantam eggs, which do need a bit more humidity.

The one that has pipped hasn't been pipped long enough for you to worry. Let it be and hopefully it will hatch on its own in the next 20 hours. If it gets to 24 hours with no progress then you can start to worry.

I didn't realize how much a difference the .6 makes, but the incubator is set at 37.6 Celsius which would be exactly perfect. Is 62 for the humidity okay while it's hatching?

Thanks it's just so heartbreaking. They become one of the family ya know.

I know!! When that momma hen attacked my splash looking silkie- my favorite, I was heartbroken. First time I cried over a chicken. Ok, I should say I blatted like a baby.

I totally agree with everything Pyxis said. I run about 30% for the first17 days.

If you're not in and out of the bator 62% is doable. If you find you do have to open for assisting or such, I would add a wet sponge or cloth and try to get up around 70%
