Hands on hatching and help

Hey guys, I've got a problem. I have 2 silkie chicks that are exactly 4 weeks old. Last night I cleaned the brooder and they were doing great. Today my mom was here and noticed that one of them was not walking. I checked the chick and it's laying with its right leg out to the side. The leg is cold to touch and it can not put any pressure on it at all. I did not see it get hurt. I don't even know how it could get hurt. It's in a glass aquarium brooder. I did recently wean them off of light about 2 days they have not had heat. I put the heat back on because the leg was cold, no improvement. What could make the leg cold to touch?? Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't feel anything out of place in the leg. No idea what is going on. It's only been with one other chick.

That is weird. I can't think of anything.

Hi Guys. My incubator thermometer says 37.8 but my extra thermometer (cheap of eBay so don't know how reliable) says 36.8???? Humidity same on both! Today is half way through day one are the eggs supposed to look like this? Sorry first hatch so just excited.... and only 4 eggs :)

You need a medical or food thermometer that can be checked in ice water (should read 0) then you can compare that to your digital thermometer to see if they're correct. There eggs look fine. I wouldn't candle them again for a few days. The light goes on the round end not the pointy end.

Oh ok. Thanks for the info... i don't have a kitchen thermometer so i will just have to adjust next time... if they hatch early turn down temp or if they hatch late turn up temp

Hi Ruby

sorry about your silkie . simple answer circulatory problems . That would be the only thing that would cause he leg to be cold to the touch . Now as to the problem could be any injury that would interrupt blood flow to the leg . Possible swelling from a higher up injury. Doesn't sound good though . You could do a hot to cold water contrast treatment to see if it helps circulation . water 110 degrees one to two minutes then ice water one to two minutes . Four or five times in succession .Or some type of lineament . I have seen contrast treatments reduce large amounts of swelling in people . Applied a little different though . hope it gets better for you .

Thanks you guys. :hugs back. It's the strangest thing. I thought circulation too. I had that leg banded with one of those thin rubber bands girls use to make bracelets but it was definitely not tight. Still had pull on it. But I can't think of anything else. How does a chick go from walking around one night to not being able to walk at all the next morning?! I realize that most likely this won't end good. I gave her some drops of nutridrench and put some small food and water dishes low on the ground. I'll give it a few days. But here will be my next dilemma....when I take the chick out to examine her or to give her the nutridrench the other chick (that's doing great) freaks out. If I have to put this one down what am I going to do with the other? Now that they are 4 weeks old I was going to slowly start introducing them to the flock. I have no other chicks out there right now. The youngest are at least 3 months old. I can't put a 4 week old chick out there alone. I could hatch some eggs but that will take 21 days. Any ideas about having a single chick left if this doesn't go well with the other?

My never say the same temp. I always try to keep them both at a happy medium. Also it's best to wait till day 7 to candle. After that I candle quickly without removing the eggs when I have to add water. :)

I'm so sorry to hear about your chick. I have no clue what it could be but I've dealt with a few leg issues now. You should try to make a splint to keep its leg straight. Give it a week and see of it has any improvement. I had one I did that with and it's doing good now. Has a limp but otherwise a happy chick. Can't hurt to try. If it doesn't work mypetchicken let's you order small orders of chicks amd you can choose a date. Some breeds ship faster so it's good to look at different ones or craigslist.com may have some. :)

If it's F not C it should be 32 degrees.
