I have another question if anyone has the time or patience!!! How long can a duckling stay in its shell with a small external pip?

I haven't hatched ducks yet but with hicks it's Adleast 24 hours.

I don't have any direct experience with a double yolker in incubation, but I would think that maybe one chick gets more nutrition than the other and is bigger/stronger and does the work pipping and zipping. But that's just a guess.

My sister in law had twin quails hatch! One died after a few hours, but I think the other lived on. I can't remember. But the quail are so tiny to begin with, it was truly amazing!

My hatch is almost over. Locked down 13 golden sebrights, 1 was questionable at lockdown, but I left it in. I dont think it will hatch, but 11 have so far and the 12th is pipped with beak showing.

4 lavender orpingtons locked down, 3 have hatched, nothing from the last, but its still day 21, so I'll leave it. I'm surprised they hatched on the end of day 20 anyway, they are usually 21/22 day-ers.

So I'm ecstatic with them so far. I've only moved the first 5 to the brooder, so the Brinsea is quite crowded with chicks right now! Waiting on that last one, then I'll move them and get some pics.

@audy5000g after having such a good hatch result, I'm more inclined to blame the post office for your issues. I was scared my birds had developed an unseen problem, but these look fine, so I'm standing by my birds. How are yours doing now?

no I didn't film it wishing I had now that I hear its very rare!!! I made a safety hole after it had been internally pipped for almost 24 hours and after that I stopped hearing or seeing anything so I waited and still nothing so I opened it and the top one was dis but to my surprise as I was looking at it and the very large yolk sac I noticed more feathers underneath!! Upon inspection there was another little one in there! It was gasping so I put the rest of the shell back in the brooder and when I checked ( every 30 seconds) lol after a few it stopped breathing too. The egg was huge and we had been watching and candling thinking for sure it was a bad egg but never saw two little shapes in there they were pretty smooshed.

The problem was that the top one had internally pipped but the bottom one was probably not getting enough air or breathing in fluid because it was underneath. There is nothing you good have done. You would have needed to get both to have proper oxygen and with all that blood there's no way you could have made a pip through the membrane.

Incubator #1 is officially in lockdown today. That's the good news...the not-so-good news is that I had a egg pipped already at day 18 before I got a chance to raise the humidity

Temps were good and steady the whole time and weren't spiking so I'm very surprised to see one pipped so early. Hopefully it will be ok, my humidity was at 38% before I opened the bator to add water and shelf liner for lockdown

I just locked down with 2 external pips. Both were fine!! Good luck on the hatch!

thank you! I don't like losing anyone but these two really really bummed me out! Now I don't know if I did something wrong! Does anyone know how they would've externally pipped and zipped with the two of them in there? They had no room to move!

See what I wrote above. It's close to impossible. They only way would have been if both were able to get proper oxygen long enough to absorb the yolk and blood and you would have had to zip them out. There's a YouTube video of a successful twin chicken hatch with assistance.

I have one that didn't draw down, but it still pipped.  I actually expected it was already DIS because it wasn't drawing down.  I'll see what happens with it when I get home. 

Me too! It took the thing a long time to hatch. I could see it was so not ready. I think it was pipped for about 46 hours. But it hatched on its own and is doing great now. Update when you can.

My last egg that was good before lock down hasn't hatched.  All the others are out and doing great but this last little baby hasn't even pipped. When I removed babies this morning to move to the brooder I candled and I can't even see the air sac.  What should I do?  Do you think it's dead?  I tried tapping the bottom of the egg and there was no sound and I haven't seen any movement coming from it at all.

Is it a dark shell??

Bummed. It's day 10 and bout 5 of my silkie eggs were showing infertile when I candled them. 2 looked to have recently passed. I'm think because I dropped one on the other when turning them the other morning. They didn't break but we're jolted badly. So far I'm only seeing about 5 that are doing what they should be. Hopefully a few hatch..

I think you might want to check out one of the duck threads. There's probably a lot of experienced duck hatchers who can help!
