Hands on hatching and help

Thanks.

right after writing this they both externally pipped so might not make it to my birthday lol. My husband got me a variety of orpington hatching eggs I've been drooling over so I'm still excited. I'll be happy to turn 25 again hehe..

It's 9 PM here, so if they make it 3 more hours it'll still be your bday in NY- does that count?

I have 4 hens and 1 rooster and I've gotten 4 eggs. I have all 4 in a incubator. And I received the eggs 3 days ago. How will I tell of their fertile or not

So, a couple weeks ago we had to have Buster (the dog we adopted from the pound a year ago) put down. Heath wise he was declining fast , especially walking because of his back hips and he wasn't eating right over the last month and when he did eat he'd have explosive diarreha all over. Then he stumbled on our stairs and fell down them dislocating his front shoulder (possibly with a break.) When we adopted him they said he was 8, the vet said, when we took him in, that he appeared to be "quite an old dog". The conclusion was either the mistreatment and possible neglect he had suffered through his life aged his body beyond it's years or he was quite a bit older than the pound had him listed for. So we made the decision to put him down. A few days later I had called my sister and was telling her about what had happened and she said, (after apologizing because it was still soon after putting him down-she's not cold hearted,) that my niece still had one of the "puppies" that her dog had back in March, that still needed a home. (There was something like 10 or 11 to begin with.) So the next day I talked to my niece and we discussed us taking the last pup that no one had wanted. They were black lab/St. Bernard mixes, and this one looked mostly black lab, and was a bit smaller than the others. So my nephew picked her up for me and brought her up when he came to get his chickens I was giving him last Monday.

BEST DECISION EVER!!!

She needs a little more weight on her than what she showed up here with, but we are fixing that. She is absolutely the best dog I've seen since my childhood (best friend) that we had for almost 14 years before we lost her too old age. For once, I think we made the right decision. She is everything that my son and I wanted in a dog. She'll be five months Friday, but she is training so well in most everything (except hogging the bed...lol) and her and my son are just awesome together.

I don't regret adopting Buster and it helps to know that the last year of his life he learned not to fear and what love was, but I would never go through that pound again and especially not during an open house. Having to put him down sucked and was very emotional, but there is no doubt that it was the right decision just as taking Tali was the right decision. So I have to share a pic or two:

She's pretty good with the chickens too!

If they are light colored you can candle around day 3 or 4 and you should be able to see development. If the shells are darker colored you may not be able to detect growth until more like 5-7 days. If you take a look here you will see what they should look like when during incubation: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation

Question I candled my eggs that are in my incubator and the ones under my broody hen. The ones under my hen look like they are farther along. Could they hatch sooner? thanks!
They certainly could. Especially if your incubator is running cooler than the recommended temps. Do you have checked/accurate thermometers in your bator?

Good luck - maybe one will hold off until after midnight!! When it comes to birthdays, Ma used to tell us to find an age we liked and stick with it! I'm a very contented 2 year old.
Lmao. Yes 2 was a good age. I can think of a few things I would miss though hahaha. :p
Happy birthday! One of my broodies hatched all 4 of her eggs on my birthday a couple of weeks ago. :)[/quote It's kind of neat I think. Like a special bond. Or I'm just really corby lmao.. :p

We will just say it does haha..

My grandmother adopted a saint Bernard/Rottweiler mix when I was a kid. Took more after the saint Bernard. Sweetest dog ever. He was called the gentle giant at the shelter. He was my best friend until he passed away of old age. Great choice. They are amazing family dogs. When my son was little we adopted a really old semi abused pug with bad health problems. We knew she wouldn't live long but when I saw her in the pound my heart went out to her. She was so ugly and she smelled to high heaven lol. We took her in until she passed about a year later. I know how hard it is but you guys made that pooches last year happy vs dying alone in a shelter. It takes a special kind of person. :)

:ya gorgeous pup, happy boy. Awesome!

I had another egg hatch yesterday evening and I moved it to the brooder this morning but I noticed the legs look splayed. Is it just because it's still young and weak or should I treat the legs?

Give it a few hours, even up to a day. Sometimes they just need to get the strength built up. But you should be able to tell whether its going to be fine, or getting worse, within 24 hours.
