I really don't know. But did you see this article that Kathy posted a while back (I'm pretty sure it was Kathy, if not, I apologize!)
It has some great pictures and description of how the egg travels through the system, etc. I didn't know an egg turns horizontally just before being laid! But maybe it will help you determine if she was eggbound, or if some other problem. Did she lay ok before you brought her to your house?

Well, these guineas are definitely coming early. I have three externally pipped and 2 or 3 that look like they are internlly pipped. I need to go and bring in my brooder cage and set it up I guess.

Hey has anyone here ever dealt with an egg bound hen? I know not hatching related but I'm concerned about my hen.. no responses in the emergency section..

Is she eating? Try crushing up some tums and get it in her anyway you can. If they are fruit flavored you can crush them I some yogurt and put it in a soda cap and hold it to her beak. She should lick it up even if she's not eating much. I know you said it broke and I don't know about the antibiotics but the calcium boost might help.

I thought I quoted you about the double box but I guess not. The breeder will not double box. And I guess she doesn't have to because if I don't buy the eggs someone else will. It would be amazing for any breeder to add her quality to their flock but I don't want to throw out a lot of money either if none will hatch but obviously others are willing to take the risk.

I didn't see the article. I'll read it now. I'm pretty sure she was egg bound though. Now that she has egg running out. She is acting like she feels a little better and when she pushes egg comes out. No shell though so I'm sure that's trouble. I feel like she has been low in calcium from all the damage to her feathers. I read that it takes alot to fix the feathers. That's why they stop laying when molting. I suspected she was low but figured she would make up for it with the oyster shell. So far her feathers look awful and now the egg issue.

Antibiotics immediately since at least one egg has broken inside, and that may or may not save her... EYP is luck for them to survive... feathers have nothing to do with calcium levels, feathers are made from pure protein, that's why many recommend withholding extra calcium and upping protein during molt... the feathers will not fix until she molts, they don't repair just get replaced... so she will look rougher before she will look better...

Calcium gluconate is a good calcium supplement if she won't eat oyster shell, I know TSC carries it...

Hope she gets better...

I scrambled some eggs and mixed it with oyster shell. After a few hours she was balking and wanting out of the crate. I let her out and she ran over to the barn amd started eating. I et her stay out a bit. She is acting completely normal even so far as begging for more egg lol.

We got her to eat the oyster shell. Tonight she passed a soft shelled egg in the barn after all this. She has been laying them more frequently. She is an older girl who lays alot. Maybe she can't keep up nutritionally. She eats fine and as far as I know she eats the oyster shell so I'm not sure why this is happening. I'll get some antibiotics tomorrow. What kind should I get?

So I went out this morning and my leghorn had a soft shell hanging out of her vent. Not sure what to do. I think I'm going to go get some tums and give that a try. @RavynFallen what type of antibiotics should I get? I'm going to tractor supply this morning..

At this point I would skip the tums and get the calcium gluconate... as for the antibiotics, either ask Kathy or search egg yolk peritonitis and antibiotics to see what is recommended... I'm not sure which is best, just that EYP can be a severe infection that can take them down quickly...

Where do I get calcium glusate. Sorry have to needed it before now.. I'll Google the antibiotics. Thanks.
