Hands on hatching and help

Thank you for asking, WVduckchick, it didn't end up happily for that one chick, by this morning it was obvious it had died. :( I'm waiting on the other 5 today, the mother won't let me check under her at all and I don't want to do more harm than good. Wish us luck.

I'm sorry. It's hard to guess what happens under a broody sometimes. We usually just have to trust that they know best. I probably would not have made the call to take the egg, although in retrospect, that probably would have been the better decision. The only broody eggs I have messed with were ones that momma left, but I could tell were still alive. So I assisted. But if one doesn't hatch while she is sitting, then I figure more was wrong.

Good luck with the others, and please let us know how it goes!

Long overdue photos of the Apple Dumpling Gang....

The darks:

Pocket Lint (Pockets, for short)

King Tut

Phred (Now, this may well be another shot of King Tut, but then again the shot of King Tut might be just another shot of Phred - they look so cotton pickin' identical that it's hard to tell. The only way WE know is because Phred is a chicken chicken - afraid of everything - and King Tut acts like the world is Tut's!)

Ruby

The Lights:

Smudge

Q-Tip

I have a heat lamp, but no incubator.
Ebay has really cheap incubators to can get a small one for like 20 dollars. I wouldn't trust it to hatch eggs but next time you can use it as a hatcher. Just to keep as back up. That way if it needs an assist you can plop it in there and keep an eye. :) I'm really sorry for your loss though. It never gets easier cause you love them all. :(

Aww they are so cute!! I can't wait till mine are this big!!! :)

They are fun, WV - virtually useless but lots of fun! Seeing them waddle around outside is hilarious! King Tut had the bad habit of sticking his face through the fencing to nibble on the tasty tomatoes on the other side, and was usually rewarded with a shot from the garden hose for his trouble. Well, earlier this week we took the fence down to let them forage in the garden since it's pretty much done for the season. He found a tomato we'd missed and kept taking a peck at it, then ducking and looking over his shoulder! Silly chickens!

Edited to add: It comes soon enough, @jenniferlamar70 - but it's kinda hard to tell since so far mine STILL don't look like "grownups"...we still think of them as "the chicks".

Lol I hear ya. We have 4 that are almost grown now and they still look to be changing everyday. They just keep getting fluffier lol. The ones we got from @RubyNala97 are only a few weeks now but I'm so excited to watch them grow and change. :)

Lol I'm really behind on pictures. We had a storm blow in that wrecked most of our property line fence. One of the coops started leaking so we've been trying to get those repairs done. Not prepared for winter and running out of time lol. I plan on taking some as soon as I can. We have 3 little orpingtons in with them right now who think they are also silkies lol look to be all roosters but I'm praying for one hen haha

Help please!!!! I have 6 eggs that should have hatched! The seventh hatched Sunday and was fine but died yesterday. The rest are not hatching!!! One is moving and looks like it has broken through the membrane but has not broken the shell. I kept my encubator at 50 all 21 days and bib not know not to open it in the last few days so I'm afraid I killed my chicks. Should I crack open the eggs? Should I leave them? The others have no movement at all and I stupidly pulled them out to candle yesterday and today. Please someone tell me what to do!!!
