Hands on hatching and help

I'm not sure. They looked good from an untrained eye. The breeder didn't say in the details section. The pic above was the pic posted. They do have the shorter bills. But none of the pics showed clearly their size. They do seem to fit the type though. I could ask the breeder.. I'm just trying to be prepared. With my luck none will develop from awful shipping but I can never find anything local. We have such good luck with our waterfowl. They seem to thrive here. Hoping to have a few more for pets.. Hoping I didn't get myself into a sticky situation. Ill message wv about it as well.

I'm here but I only did one Call hatch. I did have to assist every one and feel like I did well with all 13 of them, so I'm willing to help any way i can. I think the same basic principles hold for any assist, and don't think the Brinsea made any big difference, other than being super stable. :D

Good luck and welcome back!!

Thanks so much. I've done quite a few assist over time so I feel comfortable with those for the most part. I'm a little rusty though. Haven't hatched all winter. Im really glad to be back. I've missed hatching so much!

WV knows Brinseas and did Calls in one, she would should have tips for you there...

How typey are the parent stock? More typey they are, the harder to hatch...

Ok, so what do you mean by 'typey?'

I assume by typey she means how close they are to standard. I haven't read the standard for calls but I know they are supposed to be small, short bills and I believe they have shorter necks as well. The closer to standard they are the harder to hatch because of their bills I believe. I could be wrong though lol so dont hold me to it lol.

Typey, how close to SQ type they are... Calls not only have super short hills, but super short necks which makes pipping and zipping more difficult depending on how short both of those are... like these... took these pics at the Knoxville Dixie Classic show...

One of the exhibitors was only able to hatch 3 Calls total last year...

Ok, so standard calls for the things that make it harder for them to hatch by themselves, then self righteous $*%¥, criticize hatchers for helping? Nice.
Anyhow, thanks for explaining.

That whole thing made no sense anyway. For one, like I said, incubation is in no way natural. For two, there was concern expressed about propagating traits that lead to a breed or the birds not being viable down the line. That's dumb because we do that on purpose with a lot of breeds. Not only with Calls which are bred in such a way that them hatching on their own is extremely difficult, but even with things such as production breeds that have had the broodiness bred right out of them like leghorns. They certainly aren't propagating naturally, are they? If not for us hatching them the whole breed would go extinct. But no one has a problem with that.

But none of that even really applies at all because the reason most need help anyway is due to the fact that we're creating them in a totally artificial way which is leading to the problems hatching which we then correct by helping them out.

And of course as the pictures Ravyn posted proved, mothers help their babies hatch anyways!

What I'm saying is that whole thought process was dumb to begin with, lol. I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

I totally agree, but it still burns my butt...lol Not so much that people have that arrogance, I'm used to that, but that you'd target a group that specifically holds different values or philosophies to start crap. It'd be like me going to Sally's thread and opposing everything said on there. I don't belong, so I stay away.

I know. What they were doing in here, I have no idea. Either they didn't even read the first page, or any of the thread, or even the title, for cripe's sake, or they did and came in here with the express purpose to give views counter to ours and start a fight. Who does that?
