Hands on hatching and help

Hi all

@newchickmama91 @WVduckchick and everyone else who helped me so much yesterday when i was so worried. Last night my little baby did hatch - she needed quite a lot of help, so again, thank you for all of the advice - i used it and took my time even though i was shaking like mad!! We took it slow together and it was fine. She did pip a few blood vessels before i helped her so i was very nervous. She has a bit of a 'cut' on her arm, but i guess that will fix itself. This morning I woke up to two beautiful babies - number two was clearly a show off and got out all by herself in the night. Both are happy and healthy and seem like real cuddlers ;) Number three unfortunately was dead and very mushy. I have attached a few pics, but did want to give you all a big virtual hug and say a huge thank you

That first pic looks like she is saying "I don't always present a problem when hatching... But when I do, I'm darn cute doing it!"

Congratulations!

Look at that face!! How cute. Your very welcome I love a happy ending!

I knew it.. I knew the chances of making it through my first hatch without being hands on would be well nigh impossible.

One of my Swedish Flower Hens decided to come into the world backwards.. or at least try to.. she pipped two days early face down/pointed end....no progress for almost 36 hours and the membrane was starting to look badly yellowed.  so I helped her zip abit so she could get her head, which she quickly followed with a wing.

Once she got her back into it she did good.. though had to wait for her umbilicus to dry and pull from the shell. Yolk was fully inside.

Luckily I had taken all but one other chick out so she didn't get trompled while attached.

12 eggs to go... some running into day 23 with no pips but some movement. Can you pip the shell for them if you hear cheeping? Some of these brahma eggs are very solid.

Congrats! Good job!

Congrats! We have some great helpers on this thread, that's for sure!

Haha, I know, what a rascal!! Yes, she's gorgeous!! (such a proud mama!!)

@RavynFallen
, sorry i thought i had tagged you in to say thank you - see my babies above!!x

They are adorable.

Glad to see you pop in! LOve your daughter's pics btw. They came out awesome!

Sorry to hear that! That sucks big time!

Well, Tuesday I set 24 more silkie eggs. All five days old or less. I can tell 4 of them are going to be clears and there's 2-3 that I just can't tell cause they are too spotty, but most look promising. A couple look weak like they are quitting as soon as starting, but we'll see. I think my fertility has come up. I'd like to be able to sell hatching eggs here locally, so I hope so. I'll know more tomorrow. I hit day 3 tonight and I can usually tell by the end of day 3 what's growing and what's not.  I kept 10 chicks out of the last 3 hatches and they are doing good. mostly blues. I plan to sell whatever hatches from these guys.

We have been looking at a place about an hour and half away from here, well, I should say communicating, so far looking has been confined to a drive by and pictures sent, it's a trailer on some land,  wooded all the way around. We're talking about doing a land contract. Hoping that it happens before winter. The owner is going to be going into assisted living when a room opens up at the facility. If we do, which is looking pretty positive atm, then I may decide to add a couple ducks next year. And maybe a couple Sebbies.....lol We'll only be about 20-25 minutes from my very best friend whom I hardly get to see because of the distance, and closer to my sister and the town I lived in for 12 years after graduating college, so I am :fl

That would be amazing Ami! Fingers crossed ot all goes through. You definitely need some ducks and geese. You can't be complete without them lol.

Hey guys my call eggs are on day 7 and still doing great. Unfortunately I think my incubators fan is going in and out. I'm not sure. We thought it was just chick fluff but it sounds like its pooping out again. Do you guys think it would hurt to move my call eggs under a broody after being in the incubator. I'm afraid the fans going to completely go out and roast my ducklings. I don't want to buy a new fan since this will be our last hatch..

Yep. Remember I said I thought I fixed mine too, but it didn't last. Finally got the replacement today! But I had 2 hens go broody about a week ago, I gave them both eggs that had been incubating for 10 days. I should know in a few days if all goes well, as today is day 18, and I still have more in the incubator.

Hey, what about me? :p Just kidding!

Congrats, I'm glad they both made it! You did a great job.

I just wanted to say that I'm so glad that I read/stalked a large portion of this thread before ever embarking on incubating. It came in handy this morning on my first hatch ever. I had two chicks that would not have survived without assistance, and I knew exactly what to do. So thanks everyone who has contributed here. I have a very strong Swedish Flower Hen who had pipped the very end of it's shell and not made a big enough area to zip out of and not made any progress after 14 hour of partial zip. Miraculously it was still alive. I also have a French Copper Marans chick who was malpositioned an pipped on day 19, then nothing until trying to zip for well over 24 hours. That little one is out and strong, but has a huge bubble on it's hip area that must have been what kept it from getting into the correct position. I've read this can be from air cell issues. I'm keeping in in a separate container in the brooder with it's hatch mates so that the bubble isn't ruptured. Hopefully it reabsorbs quickly.

Ok thanks. Thats good to know. I've never swapped before mid incubating. I have 3 broodys right now so that wasn't an issue. We keep our chickens and ducks seperate though so I didn't want to use them since they wont be penned together afterwards. Don't have many options right now though..
