I agree with this. They can take awhile and it seems like they are making progress. Just be careful with water dishes if you have baby chicks in there. Add some rocks or marbles, so they don’t drown. You can also wet sponges and stick them around the eggs that are hatching.
How’s everything going today?
All is well. Chirpy is strong and healthy this morning and was joined last night by egg #3 about 10 pm. So technically 4 healthy cheeps counting the oldest one. All solid blue, no splash. There is one egg that was less developed that may yet hatch. Luckily only the one needed an assist and he has been loud ever since.
I see you made a safety hole. Did she externally pip on her own after the safety hole? If so, how long ago? Did you open the pip up like it is in the video or did she do that? At this point, I would remove some of that shell, making sure not to rip or tear the inner membrane and check the inner membrane for veins. You need to use a lubricant on the membrane with bacitracin or coconut oil. Ducks take a very long time to hatch. And they can be very active, which is normal. But once they are ready they really, really start struggling to get out. She doesn’t look like she’s struggling to get out. It’s always better to give more time then go in to soon. You can also candle the pointy end and looks for veins, since that’s the spot that usually has veins after they start receding from the air cell area. I’ll find some pics for you.
Thank you so much! I did a safety hole after about 30 hours of internal pip. That seemed to help as she perked right up and pipped. She did about 3-4 external pips then just continued pecking for the past 24 hours on that one spot. She pecked that big hole on her own. When I checked on her this morning I found her beak all bloody- she kept throwing her head up in that hole and hitting a pointy spot in the egg. I broke it off and saw she was shrink wrapped slightly and couldn’t turn to get out. I chipped away a little bit and she’s pushing to get out.
