Hardest decision ever :-( - UPDATE post 69!!!!!

I'm so sorry you are going through this hope both Sunshine and your hen get through it okay.

I had trouble getting a couple of my chicks to eat yogurt by itself, but when I sprinkled a bunch of crumbles on top of the yogurt, they ended up discovering they liked yogurt after all. Make sure Sunshine is hungry and then put a bunch of crumbles on top of the warm oatmeal or eggs (maybe mash it down just a tiny bit so that the oatmeal sticks to the crumbles). Hopefully, Sunshine will go after the crumbles and get a taste of the yummy stuff too and change his mind.

You should be able to order Tylan 50 online instead of waiting for someone to get it in, try ValleyVet or one of the Poultry Supply places.
A good recipe for the Phoenix and very nutrisious is this:

Brown Rice
Blueberries
Greens (Spinach, collards etc)
Raw fish
Boiled eggs
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Echinacea

The original recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups rice, 1 cup berries, 1 cups green and 3 fish fillets but I have made small quatities and just added 1/2 to 1 each of the vitamins. I crush shell and all with the egg or you can peel them and just use the egg, but shell adds calcium. I have served this warm on cold days and they love it. I have also used it on sickly birds too.

lockedhearts, that recipe looks super healthy and easy to make - the flock's daily breakfast looks somewhat like this and they all LOVE it... except fussy Sunshine, who will let it dry in his bowl.

I'll try the parrot food and if he likes that, I'll sprinkle some on the "healthy mix" to see if I can trick him to try new things!

The vet will get the order of Tylan-50 either tomorrow or Thursday, I'll go pick it up then.

Here in Canada, 99% of meds are by prescription only so you can't order them online and stores don't carry anything.

You really HAVE to go through a vet, it's so annoying

I'm so glad Sunshine is still around!!! I feel a little guilty. I really Really REALLY want Sunshine to survive, grow up and show us what a gorgeous rooster he really is. But that's not my call to make and I don't want to be pushing you in a wrong direction for you. I'm so glad you found him. I'm so glad he has a home where he's loved and appreciated. I'm so glad people like you are in the world. What you're doing has touched the hearts of a lot of us here because we would do it if we could. Whatever you do, whatever the future holds for Sunshine, he's had wonderful care from you. If he makes it, I'll be overjoyed. If you have to cull him, you'll have my sympathy, support and admiration.

But, darnit, I want him to survive!

Hi Nicky! I'm really sorry that you're having problems with that poor rooster.

If nothing works out with the meds and you have to make a decision, please consider having the vet euthanize him humanely. I'm suggesting that for your peace of mind. I've done it both ways and find that the peaceful way is a lot better than the home method.

Which vet are you using as I don't know of any that treat chickens. Norma

The only one I've found is http://www.canpages.ca/page/fr/QC/g...re-de-granby-animaux-de-la-ferme/4201224.html - I have heard that the vet school in Ste-Hyacinthe might also treat but it's too far from here.

Thanks for the support, fellow BYC'ers!

Sunshine is still sick as ever but I should get the Tylan tomorrow if all goes well... I have been sick since Sunday night and have to go to the hospital today so the birds have to take a back burner until I get better.

Will update later this week!

First and foremost, I hope you are doing better after your hospital visit(you have to take care of you FIRST).

Second, I am glad Sunshine is still hanging on-I keep watching your thread hoping you'll tell us he is all better. Hope the Tylan works for him.

I bow down to the miracle drug that is Tylan

After 24 hours, Sunshine is 100% better!!

After weeks of choking on his phlegm and sporting a constant, thick wet cough and rasping like Darth Vader, now he is sounding and looking splendid! I almost don't believe it... How can a drug work so fast??

For sure he's not cured and will be medicated for another few days, he's molting and looking very much like a ghetto bird but MY GOSH! A week ago I was going to end his life and now this??

Rosie, my laying hen with the same affliction, pooped in her water dish last night so had not drank the meds, she was still coughing and rasping this morning. I make sure to refresh everything twice a day and also feed probiotics.

As I said, both birds are molting and this weekend we're getting hit again with siberian temps so they'll stay in the house for a few more days.

I'm just speechless with JOY!!
