Happy Birthday Keeper! 1 year old today!

A whole year has gone so fast and so much has happened. Good & bad but we wouldn’t swap him for anything!

@Yorkshire Coop

You forgot to mention our Tarantula's and Rattle Snakes. :gig

Speaking of snakes, I had a horrific scare this morning, I was sitting with Hilda in the coop, she was on my lap. All of a sudden I hear this scratching on the outside of the run on the hardware cloth, I peek around the corner and there I see a lizard running across the floor with a snake in hot pursuit!!! (the hardware cloth is 1/2 inch, keeps pretty much everything out except baby mice, baby lizards and small snakes.)

So I leaped up as fast as I could and shut the doors to the run from the coop to keep Hilda safe, meanwhile I am panicking, "What am I going to do!!" :barnie If this is a rattle snake, we have BIG trouble!! So I calmed myself down as best I could, and went outside to look into the run and saw him sneaking around looking for this lizard. THANKFULLY I was able to ID him as NOT being a Rattler but rather some sort of young Bull Snake. Adult Bull Snakes grow to over 6 foot in length, 2 inches in diameter! This one however was about a 1/2 inch in diameter and about 2 foot long. Big enough to still scare the heebie jeebies out of me! (All these snakes carry venom, only rattlers carry venom to kill or mame you.)

So, since this was not a killer snake, I had no choice but to go back in, lock Hilda in the coop and go into the run to chase this thing out! I sneaked in very slowly to the run and there he was. I shooed him out and boy did he slither fast!! But wow, I was still shaking like a leaf!! I quickly got to work on adding 1/4 inch hardware cloth along the entire bottom of the run, of COURSE I did not have enough, :he so there are spots he could still get in, but hopefully he won't come back. :barnie

A few weeks ago we had a 4 foot Prairie Rattler out in the front yard, thick fat thing, curled up by the wild bird water dish, tagging birds that came for water. These Rattlers are nearly INVISIBLE and blend in SO well you can't see them! I nearly reached down to move the bird's water and could have been bitten!!! You don't want to mess with Rattlers, they do not get out of your way and if they get annoyed enough, will bite, if they don't kill you, it ruins the rest of your life with internal issues and pain.

I almost stepped on a Rock Rattler years ago that got into the Quail aviary, if it werent for the quail circling the thing, I would have never seen him and stepped on him. Praise the quail!!

Beautiful picture of Keeper!! :love Very majestic and handsome too. :)

Crikey Leyla that is all very scary! No wonder you were shaking like a leaf. I’m pleased to read that you & Hilda were all ok in the end! Also what a lucky escape with the quail circling to alert you! Me, I would need a big snake proof suit to go out in at yours!
We have adders & grass snakes here. Only encountered one once though. A grass snake once slithered out at me at a pond where Charlie & his Dad were fishing. I was being kind & taking them some pack up for lunch when it shot out in front of me. I ran the other way screaming!

:woot Charlie is all enrolled at college now. Took him today to get everything sorted out and he starts on Monday. They also gave him a list of the things he needs like overalls, safety boots etc etc. So it’s a mad rush now to get it all. I do wish they had given him it sooner so we could have been more organised. Plus I thought it would be the following week to start if we did need extra things. But obviously not! :fl He enjoys his new course and getson ok at the college.

Fortunately Rattlers are not that common at this altitude. We've only seen 4 or 5 in the 25 years we've been here. LOTS more in the desert at lower altitude though. The cold usually sends many of them packing up here. The bull snakes however are a different story! Everywhere!! This dang small snake was back in the run today again! I did a better job this time, I don't THINK he can't get back in.

Oh this is fabulous news Kim! :woot I am so happy for Charlie!! Yes they could have warned you a bit sooner so you could get all his things together. You can do it Kim!! :D I am so glad Charlie is able to follow his dream!

My younger son and I were in Colorado last week, looking at colleges and visiting a good friend who recently moved there. She took us horseback riding!

My friend in purple, her son in blue and our guide in front.

My son bringing up the rear. His horse and mine did not like each other, so kept their distance.

It was an hour and a half ride over hill and dale, rocks and roots, around trees, and horses up to their bellies walking in a stream.
We didn't see any snakes, but saw deer, chipmunks and a mama moose with her calf! Exciting to see a moose, even though they were partially hidden in the brush.

Hi Kim

Sounds like all systems go to get Charlie kitted up for college. If anyone can do it Kim, you can! I bet he is excited and a bit anxious! Keeper is just a super model..... Happy Birthday Keeper! That first year has certainly been a rocky one! Let's hope the subsequent ones are more run of the mill and less expensive!..... but totally worth it to see him looking so gorgeous!

I didn't get out to ride on Tues or Wed as I hoped as Ian needed some help with his ggs but Lauren and I flew the

today and had a lovely ride out on Rebel and MeMe. I gave her a choice of horse and she said that she wasn't frightened to get back on Rebel so I suggested she ride out on him and then we would swap half way, which worked out very well. Had several canters but no where to open up for a good gallop and I think Reb was feeling a bit stiff anyway but still keen enough to go forward. We are planning on going out again tomorrow and will be taking Rascal and MeMe, so Reb can have a day or two off. We are at a local show on Saturday with Zak, so won't get any riding done that day and I have arranged to shift manure and do some beekeeping on Sunday.... I desperately need to empty my muck bays before the winter and the weather on Sunday is probably going to be the last warm day before autumn to check on bees.
Unfortunately all my ggs have come back from their summer grazing field with mud fever. Rainy used to have problems with it up there but it never got very bad. I'm really surprised considering that the ground has been dry but Reb looks like a rodent chewed the inside of his forelegs almost up to his knees and MeMe has a nasty sore on her near hind heel but her other legs also have scabs/lesions. The others have scabs too, as I discovered when I started checking them all..... no fun scrubbing 16 legs with Hibiscrub every day and trying to remove scabs. Thankfully none of them seem excessively sore yet, so hopefully I will be able to get on top of it before it gets too painful. I really could do without that extra work though!
Think that is all my news for now. Hope you have a lovely weekend and perhaps manage to get out on the gorgeous Harry in between shopping for Charlie's college gear.

Love and best wishes

Barbara
