Harvey the Great is Dying. . .

Pics
Now that Harvey is feeling better, I must ask a personal question:

How is he jumping the hens without squashing them? He's the size of a small turkey! Do they get injured?

Yeah, that's funny. His "favorites" have no back feathers, but other than that he's pretty gentle! ????? I made saddles for the girls but so far they just freak out in them. One girl was so scared she went to Harvey for him to save her. He was scared of her and she chased him around the yard! Now, that was funny! :lau Someone asked me to get a photo of Harvey next to a person to see how tall he really is. He does not let people stand next to him. I can get within about 2 feet of him but he will move away if closer. I eyeballed his height compared to me and he comes almost to my knee. So he is between 17 & 18 inches tall! Big Boy! :love

I completely agree!!

I have always wanted Jersey Giants, and this has sealed the deal for me. I WILL be getting some next year.

They are cool birds, I have one in my flock named Black Betty who is still a chick, she is not the friendly floof yet but I'm working on it. She's just in that skittish teenage phase right now.

For anyone who doesn't have Baytril on hand, Cipro should also work. It is a major metabolite of Baytril.
I don't know what part of the country you live in. Here in California you cannot obtain antibiotics except from a Vet. So far you can order Fish Mox from out of state but TSC and other feed stores no longer have over-the-counter meds. The only "chicken" vet in my county is miles away and it takes $75 up front consultation fee. I am stocking up on the Fish Mox for now.

I'm sure you don't know this, but Harvey was supposed to be a pullet! I named her Pearl originally! He grew so fast he lost the ability to walk for a month. Everyone here said it was Mareks, but he didn't have the other symptoms, like the way the eye looks. I gave him vitamins and he grew into the giant he is today. He's pretty friendly, ate from my hand again yesterday (first time in a long while since he's done that) and fathered 5 of my chicks. One of his chicks is a rooster to be and I named him Jethro. He has some remarkable markings! You will love these chickens, they are good layers (I have two black jersey giants) they are nice and gentle and get along with all the other chickens!

This is Jethro, he is 8 weeks old now.

Simply stunning!!

She will buddy up to you as soon as she realizes you are where her food and treats come from! I don't have time to "hand raise" my chicks, they are put outside from day 2. Even my "incubator" chicks at 5 weeks old will now run to me when I approach, expecting something good!

Mine are getting better about it. They are four and six weeks old. Just over the past week they've learned to come running as a group when they hear me call for them, and yesterday three of the six were perching on my head and my shoulders as I sat in the run, lol. The Speckled Sussex, Orpington, and Wyandotte are the most "hands-on" birds I have, the Polish, BJG, and black Orp/Australorp/EE mix are undecided still. They are curious, but still run if I reach out for them.

This morning Harvey was up and walking, ready to be released from the run to free range. I opened the door and he paraded out with the girls! First time seeing him act very normal in a long time! He is vocalizing again and making his honking noises to the girls! I'll take some photos today and try to get a video if I can. Thank you for caring so much!

Oh i’m so happy to hear this @Peppercorngal (maybe the titel of this topic should be changed hehe).
Thanks for the update! I’m so happy for you and Harvey:yesss:
