I think it's caused by something like hydrocephalus, pushing the brain upwards.

Whoa...... Im a little confused....so a vault is a brain with no skull covering it? there is only skin to protect it?

I have crested ducklings hatch like that quite often. If there is no break in the skin usually they do fine and the crest covers up the big glob. When they get older they kind of grow into it and its not so big.

Almost all my chicks hatch out vaulted but that is pretty big!
How is the baby doing now??
