Has anyone seen my chicks? USPS Rant...UPDATE in pg2

A lot of classes are different, though, so it may vary. They talked about chickens when I brought it up and then they were talking about the odd things that they had seen shipped in the mail. They didn't really mention what to do with them, though.

Was it a mis-load?

I worked for UPS as a seasonal driver's helper. Now, it WAS the Christmas season, so it was very busy (we'd be out till 7 pm most nights and sometimes later!). However, the loader would always pack the truck in an asinine way. You could have 10 packages going to homes on the Presidents (a neighborhood where every street is named after a President. Taft, Hoover, etc) all placed together on a shelf, and undoubtedly there will be more packages.. sometimes going to the same homes as the others... scattered around that you'd only find as you start clearing out the truck. It sucked when you already delivered to that area, and you find one more package at the end of the night... or worse, when another driver would call and tell you that there was a mis-load! I really wanted to smack our loader.

Anywho, you'd think a box of peeping creatures would be hard to loose though. Especially if it's such a novel idea.

Y'know, it's sad how far we've gotten away from the basics of life. 50 years ago it was no biggie to have chicks delivered to you.

My hubby works for the post office and yes, postal employees are very knowledgeable about live chicks. I remember shortly after I got married I got a call from the PO. Hubby was off of work that day and there was a box of chicks there for my mother in law. She wasn't answering the phone to come pick up her chicks and they were driving the postal people, well, postal. LOL

I went down and picked them up and boy were they noisy. I could see why they would want them picked up.

Postal employees have no control over what gets to their destination when. Sometimes its a matter of how much room there is on the truck, whether something came down the line before the truck departed or after, etc etc. If they get it they deliver it. Ideas of undelivered parcels just sitting around a post office are just that...ideas.

On a positive note, I just called the PO to allert them that I have chicks coming and to call me first thing Monday when they come in so I can get them home and warm. They were really nice about it, and not because hubby works there. We're lucky to have a great PO here.

Sometimes they can call another office and find it, but most of the time until it's in our office, there's nothing we can do.

I will say that I have had Asheville hub (35m away) call me and say they just got a delivery of some chickens for me in the late afternoon and if I wanted to come pick them up, it would save them having to spend another night in the box. I thought that was especially nice. First time it's ever happened! hehe That was last Spring, I think.

I'm glad you got your little peepers finally, as for the lady getting a box of peepers by accident, unfortunately, as far as I know, if a package is delivered to your address, meaning it has your address on the box, you can keep it. I don't know if the box was addressed wrong or delivered to the wrong address. If it was just delivered to the wrong house, she had no business selling them and should have contacted the post office right away, but if it was her address and just someone else's name on the label, she can do whatever she wants with them.

JerryO I'm not sure that is true If I got a package that mistakenly has my house number with a neighbors name on it I wouldn't keep it, it's not mine. That's stealing..... Not my name, I didn't pay for it & I keep it cause it had the wrong house # or even street address & to me that equats stealing.


that said the woman was ranting on about how they were packed with "no food & water even, what's wrong with those people" & umm if she'd check she'd understand that is standard & the timing & work that goes into shipping them in that window where they don't need the food and water & can safely be shipped...

I wish I could remember where I'd read it. I'd wanted to point the woman here to come educate her but I was too pressed for time to stop and address it. Can you imagine just taking someone's stuff because it goes to the wrong address? I always get the stu that's suppose to go to house #60 that ends up with the *typo #50. I always bring the stuff to her. I just can't imagine stealing from someone like that never mind selling it off and making money on it.

Problem? Chicken addiction is a problem?

These are people who think going out in your PJ's or barefoot is just wrong and their kids are not allowed outside unless they are with them. Their son is 10 and well over 5 feet tall and 100 pounds. If I am a hillbilly according to my neighbor's standards, then they are just going to have to learn to live with it.

I have known some darn fine hillbillies and am proud to be one. So how else might I convince them to build the inevitable fence? Oh this a whole other topic...​
