I agree.
Rascal was called Franco at the shelter....I kept saying Franco, Paco, Marco, Taco, but kept telling him he was such a rascal, so there it was!

Exactly what I mean, @aart! This may not have been true of your Rascal, but some dogs have bad memories connected with a previous name and won't respond to it; a new name equals a new start.

Rascal, and 4-5 litter mates, came to SPCA from a neglectful 'backyard breeder'.
At least that's the story I got.
He was rather unsocialized, way underweight, not housebroken, and had several infections.
But he was smart and sensitive and trained pretty well and quickly.
I don't think he gave a rip about what he was called.
He got used to 'coming' at 'Rascal'.

Have to mention that he's old(13) and creaky now and soon to meet his demise.

Aww, sorry to hear. Rascal sounds a lot like my Tambo... one day I may post his story. For him, "come" when I called meant twitch an ear in my direction, and if necessary, wait for me to pick him up. He also was a Sheltie and Sunny/Sammy reminds me of him, physically, emotionally, psychologically. Your Rascal, my Tambo and our Sammy were/are loved and safe, and have given light and love. In this world that's a lot for these wounded souls.

16 mo., @aart. The Kid is 13. But I'll tell you why this is a match made in heaven. The Kid is ADHD and a little autistic. Add to that our isolation out here. He has no social contacts outside of school with kids his own age. Thank God, he loves to read, but he needs interaction with a living being other than his grandparents. We're a couple of fuddy-duddies! Booo-ring! This dog - not just "a" dog, as in "any" dog, is just what he needs. And I already have Gracie. This dog needs HIM. This dog needs lots of hands-on, petting, stroking, cuddling, loving. And so does This Kid. This kid, who can't bear to be touched. This dog will break those barriers for this kid. Look back at that pic of the Kid and the dog. What do you see? Touching. Cuddling. Stroking. THIS dog. THIS kid.

I’ve been following this thread for a while to see how the pet finder pup worked out for you. So glad it’s going well so far. My daughter works with autistic children and their families, and swears that dogs have an enormous impact on the child and their families. Good luck with integrating the new pup.

I had a cat we called "bat" and "8 o' clock", neither of which was her name (Katrina Catherine) but she was Bat because she was solid black, would lay on her back with her fangs sticking out looking like a bat cartoon.... 8 o' clock because she was a holy terror between 8am and 8pm but sweet and cuddly between 8pm and 8am

But I found a basset hound puppy around 6 weeks in Alabama on puppyfinder.com. So I got the owners number and we texted and he sent me pictures and videos so then I sent money to his PayPal account and I still have her, Dixie, who is one year 4 months now. Sure there might be scams but if you ask them for videos then it might be considerable.

The site looks legit. Never used it before but coming from working in fraud, with any online and/or in-person purchase/adoption like this go meet the owner/puppy in person before making any further decision to take the dog home.

Thanks, @NHMountainMan ! The Kid, my g-son, is my first experience with a kid on the spectrum, and it's been an adventure! We thank God he's not severe, and is adapting well, although every day he does surprise us. He's just so bright! Incidentally we also have two cats, and one of them has adopted The Kid as her own, which also helps.
