Has impaction turned sour crop but is still hungry and energetic?

She is acting otherwise normal. I'm wondering if she has coccidia because now another hen has green stool and I read that coccidia can cause a doughy crop.

Should I treat with Corid to be sure?

Lesson learned and am now going to use coconut oil. Should I syringe her water? She is drinking but getting worried.

How old are they? Is the other chicken sick?

It wouldn’t hurt to treat them, though I don’t think coccidiosis can directly lead to a sour crop. I think the idea is more that an imbalance in the digestive tract caused by coccidiosis can lead to a yeasty/sour crop. If she and your other flock members are acting fine, I wouldn’t treat for coccidiosis. If coccidiosis is causing a problem, usually the chicken will act pretty sick.

I know you really care about her and that this is a stressful ailment to treat, I’m sorry you’re going through this with her. I wouldn’t worry too much if you’ve seen her drinking, she is probably okay and doesn’t need any help yet. You’re very attentive and keeping a good eye on her. Offer her some electrolytes by holding a dish up to her beak while she is roosting tonight and that should give her a good chance to drink and rehydrate if she feels like she needs to before bed. If she doesn’t take nah don’t be alarmed. You said she was alert and eating all day, she was likely drinking, also.

Let her get a good nights rest and keep us updated on her. You can also gently support her crop a bit as she is roosting before tucking her in to sleep, this sometimes works to let a little food drain and put less pressure on her crop. Hold it just for a minute or so nothing crazy.

They are all about 3.5 years old and everyone else is acting normally so I will hold off on the Corid.

She drank some probiotic/electrolyte water on her own before bed tonight. Should I let her eat normally or continue to keep food at a minimum? She had a scrambled egg or two today, plus the oil, and some bugs. (I watched to make sure no grass)

Thank you for the help and kind words.

You’re very welcome :)

I always let mine self limit their food and water intake when they’re having crop issues. If you really genuinely feel she is overdoing it on the foot, you can limit that how you feel appropriate. I wouldn’t go any longer than 24 hours without letting her eat. But I wouldn’t withhold any water; let her drink all she wants. Water is important and when they have a crop issue their instinct is usually to drink a lot of water to try to clear things out.

Keep us updated on how she does. I’m hoping since she is passing some stool she will empty her crop a bit overnight.
