Has to be a two-legged predator

Sometimes just putting up a security camera sign is deterrent enough.

"Smile, thieves, you're on candid camera."

They don't have to know you're bluffing.

WriterofWords,

Your roos may not seem to be loud to you.

There are however people with very acute hearing that might find them very loud indeed.

I can hear our girls from over 150 feet away inside their coop from inside my house when they launch into the egg song, sing along.

My wife can't hear them at all under the same conditions.

Just a bit of information.

I have exceptionally good hearing, trust me, if they were making noise I'd hear them, thanks though. Also like I said, there really isn't anyone around me close enough to worry about and those have their own chickens and roos. I went up the road to a neighbor who still has his fighting birds and asked if he's had any trouble and he said no, but he'd keep an eye out for me. He has beautiful birds too, but those taken from are unique to this area. No one else has Silkies, or the cochins, and I have had a lot of comments on them too. I just remembered the guys that did the electric line were fascinated with them. I don't think they had anything to do with it, but I'll mention it to the SO because my dogs got used to them and the birds also looked forward to lunch time snacks from them, so they would be familiar with them.

Kate, several store carry FAKE security cameras. A sign and a fake camera to go with it (some have battery operated lights that flash to look more real) may do the trick. That is absolutely nuts! Have your neighbor write down the license plate or take a pic the next time they see the van. It would be a nice accompaniment to a police report!

What about a game cam...or some other sort of motion-detector still-cam? I don't know what those cost, but I've heard people say they are fairly inexpensive.

Do you know anyone you trust to camp out at your house while you're at work?

I can't tell you how much that upsets me! I hope you find out what's happening...and if it IS someone taking them, I really hope you catch them!!

(You must have a really nice blue heeler...most of the heelers I know would remove a limb if anyone tried to catch them

I posted this thread with pics of some of my boys on it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=271600

I'm
thinking of having Steven stay home a couple of days but I hate to have him miss school right now. I don't know anyone else I could get to stay here. I'll look into the fake cameras. KK, my Heeler is still under a year and very sociable. She was voted Miss Congeniality at her Obedience class...

That must be so frustrating and annoying. I always feel so violated when someone vandalizes my property.

I like the idea of fake cameras and signs if you can't afford the real thing. They do make some cheap real ones depending on how far the area is from your house. It is interesting that they take only the roos. Is there any cock fighting going on around there? Maybe they don't care what kind of roo as long as they can get them to fight. Maybe kids trying to act like big shots and act tough.

Good luck and I hope you get them. Have you notified your Sheriff?

All the deputies on the SO are friends of mine and they try and drive by as often as possible. The outlawed cock fighting here about a year ago and these wouldn't be of any use to them anyway, that is one question I asked the guy up the street who still has his birds. I just don't know, and since two were male ducks it just doesn't have a pattern. Most of the ones taken weren't that special to me except for Tux and Squeeker duck. I liked the others, but most of them didn't have a name because they weren't personal if you know what I mean. Now all the ones that are left are my favorites, so if anyone else disappears it's going to be really upsetting. Since they are taking roos, I'm also worried about Cobalt, Nugget's son, that would be devastating to lose him.

This is horrible and outrageous. I can't believe how rotten people can be. Didn't their mothers teach them better than this?!?!?

Could you at least put a lock on the coop at night?

Good luck, and I hope you don't lose any others.

Wow I am really sorry

I suggest either :
Investing in some locks for your chicken coops ( like a padlock at least until these disappearences go away . . . )
New / more locks for your home especially windows and Gates
A security camera fake or real
Security camera signs
A REAL dog or a motion detecter that makes noise like a mean aggresive dog . . . Found ay home depot and other stores
A " Beweare of guard dog sign "

I hope this stops happening
