Hatch-a-long! ~ Anyone setting 8JAN-15JAN??

Hi! I know I am super-late to the party, but I set 36 eggs in my brinsea on January 8th. They were eggs from my barnyard . I know I will get a mish-mah of chicken mutts! I have a cochin rooster, a bantam cochin frizzle rooster, and an easter egger rooster. The hens are Easter eggers, cochins, and Tetra Tints from Tractor supply.

Of the 36 eggs I set, 24 seem to be developing. I think that is pretty good due to the wicked cold weather we have been having---I just don't think the chickens seem to mate as often when it is super cold.
So, Now I am in lock down--day 19.

Good luck to everyone for a successful hatch!

Good luck!!

My first ever batch is going into lockdown this afternoon. Some of mine are a mutt mix too, but what the heck. I have some that will be red frizzle, some red cochin on black frizzle, some black cochin/frizzle, a few gold and/or silver campines and the rest are mutt mixes. Can't wait to see what comes out of some of those crosses.

As an added bonus, one of our Gold Star hens went broody just a few days before I set this batch and hers are hatching now.....3 still kicking, 1 died after hatch, but that's not bad for a barnyard girl. I have a black hen setting another batch and she's no more than a week behind the Gold Star. Chicken math is definitely about to hit again!!....

Happy hatching everyone!!

Good luck to you, too ChixAddict. I love to incubate/hatch. I've has my incubator for 3 years now--also have had the good luck of having devoted broodies who did the work for me, too!

I've gotten some pretty funny looking peeps from my barn yard mutts--but also some really good layers, too. I'm especially interested to see if the peeps from the Tetra Tints ( which are a hybrid themselves) keep their excellent laying characteristics even when mixed with an easter egger rooster, or a Frizzle cochin! When I first got the Tetra Tints as 3 day old chicks, I was not too impressed--they were flighty and nervous. Now they are bout 9-11 months old, and have settled down and become excellent layers of large medium brown eggs. They lay almost every day--even in super cold weather...
anyway, I just can't wait to see what I get!

8 more days to go.....I candled again today - 6 of 7 Black Java eggs are going strong! But that's the last 'peek' I'll get before I get 'peeps'!

So, ya'll had better please post those zipping photos and newly hatched chicks photos soon! Please?! At least I'll see your successes instead of fretting over my own little hatch.

Although, I really need to get a brooder set up. Next week is supposed to be in the 30's high and low 20's at night - might be a touch chilly in the barn even with an Ecoglow on 'em. Oh where to set up the brooder inside? So the dog doesn't bark at every peep, and the cat doesn't stare at them all night? And the parrot doesn't freak out.....Oh where or where to put the little chicks? Although yes, I know these Java's can take the cool weather just fine, it's me that cannot take it! I'll freeze my fingers and toes running out there 15x/day to watch 'em and feed 'em and treat 'em and freshen water and...and...and... !

Just 8 more days...sigh.

Life is good--Hopefully, the time will pass quickly, and your peeps will hatch safely and quickly.

I have the same problem--since my last hatch ( last year), we got a new dog. I KNOW she will not leave a brooder alone if she hears chirping in it....Our old dog could not have cared less, but "Lacey" will be fascinated. I'm thinking of putting the brooder ( large gray tote ) on top of a table with the chairs removed so Lacy cannot climb up. As soon as it is humanely possible, I have a large built-in brooder in the barn, but it is just too cold out there right now, even with heat lamps.
anyway, hang in there--it won't be long!

ChixAddict- mutts are fun! I can't wait for pics of your babies! :D

Lift Is Good- breath. I have a toddler to chase around so he helps the time to by but patience is not one of my virtues either. My DH decided he is building our brooder so instead of emptying out a tub for me yesterday he made the base of a brooder. It has a lynolium type sheet on top of plywood. He let it dry on overnight. I am crossing my fingers that he finishes it by Friday and that it fits in the door.

I set a couple of days ahead of most of you guys, and I have one little baby so far (out of the two Serama eggs) and the other has pipped. Hoping that one hatches by tomorrow. :D Here is the first one, Raine (Daddy is Slash and Mommy is Ava...Raine is in reference to Guns n Roses song "November Rain" as well as Slash's song "Bad Rain". Love this baby's color...hoping it ends up exchequer since the pair is exchequer x black :D

Chick in the burbs I thought I would post the results of my eggs that hatch from the same seller as you. I was not near as lucky to get 100% hatch like cbnovick did. I recieved 24 eggs and only 19 went into lockdown. Out of those 19, I got 8 chicks happy and healthy, 1 egg sadly had a baby pip the wrong end and didnt make it:( and I still have 10 in the incubator just incase since we are only on the night of day 22(im not hopefull for the others to hatch). I am hoping you get a better hatch rate than me. I ll be watching to see your results. Good luck!

YAY!!! I needed a chick infusion! Everyone seems bent on reminding me how badly shipped eggs hatching rates are. I think everything is going great but that nagging doubt is always there. :/ Post some more pics when the little ones buddy hatches and when they fluff up. And anything in between. :D Love the little fluff balls. :love
