Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Okay everybody we need some advice...like i had posted earlier we received six more eggs in the mail today (kinda unexpectedly).

So now we have to decide what incubator to put them. We already have ten Marans that we set in the incubator last Sunday and so these eggs would be exactly a week behind our Marans. Can we put them in the LG incubator with our other eggs or should we put them in our homemade bator? We just aren't sure what to do because when our Marans go into lockdown we would still have to be turning the eggs we have now because they would only be at days 12-14.

Another thing we thought of doing was to put all the eggs into the LG until lockdown of the Marans and then for lockdown switch the Marans to the homemade incubator and keep the other 6 in the LG. But we weren't sure of this idea because the temp in the homemade bator can be very jumpy at times.

Help! We don't know what to do!

Interesting options, keep in mine there is no "right" /"wrong" answers to this.

Also, Marans generally all other things like temps being equal take an extra day or two or up to day 25 I've been told is "normal".
I know lots of ppl who do staggered hatches have a different incubator they use as a "hatcher" and move their lockdown eggs into it.
That sounds handy to me, and if I had a spare I'd likely do that myself. So then it is a matter of how touchy on the temp? and will it hold the higher humidity for your lockdown?

I think the "best" answer is think about what is most likely to work for YOU, go with your gut feeling.

Speaking for dblea202, Last time we tried incubating we had our incubator in the basement which was really drafty... Since then we bought the LG bator and have moved both upstairs to an extra room that stays at a more constant temperature. Humidity was never really a problem in our homemade one, we had it hold steady at 70% for lockdown...

I think what we will probably do is set these 6 mystery eggs tomorrow morning in with the marans... When it comes time to lockdown for the marans we will transfer them to the homemade one for the last 3+ days.... We will set up the homemade one around day 15 to make sure its good to go and holds everything steady!... I just think this way will be the easiest! We are still open to opinions!

HELP!!! I cracked an egg at the air cell today during turning. It's a viable chick!! Darn. Is it a goner? no leaking or anything, small crack. Didn't want to give up if I don't have to, but I also don't want to contaminate the other eggs for some reason. Anyone have any ideas? Can I save it? This is on mid-day 6. So we've still got a little ways to go.

PS. I realized AFTER marking that I shouldn't use marker. Sigh. I'll know next time.

I also started some eggs on the 5th - I had 6 lavender ameraucana and 6 wheaten marans shipped. All 6 of the ameraucana eggs are looking good - the marans eggs I really can't make anything out.
I started a bunch of my own EE eggs at the same time (maybe about 2 dozen?) - they were old, and had been refrigerated, so I didn't expect too much, but none developed :( But I can always try again.

I put three silkie eggs into the bator on the 8th - my silkie laid her first eggs and I figured I'd give them a shot! Two are definitely developing, one has a blood ring, I think, but I'm going to give it a few more days to be sure. They should be black, possibly showgirls. I am excited, they'll be my first homegrown and hatched chicks!

well i don't know if any of you guys on here do the mystery swaps held by reesepoultry every month but we have been doing it since november and we received 6 mystery eggs!! haha i guess we will now be starting 6 more eggs tomorrow in our homemade incubator!! We said we wouldn't get addicted but its happening haha

I've done that swap the past 2 months but dropped out this month due to lack of funds caused by my move. I'll be back in next month though. I love the swap because even if you don't have or want eggs you can participate because there are so many categories to choose from.

EGG!
Important Egg

1st Egg of 2013 here !!!!

Also, First (other than 4 pullet eggs) since the hens reacted to the odd weather by going into moult in SEPT!
& 1st from Ugly my EE, since I put her w/ the new pure (Black) Ameraucana “BlueJeanBoy” (as in Blue gene) the only Roo Ugly has ever let w/in 5 ft of herself, and they were rubbing shoulders at the feeder last week…

The Egg is darker green & larger than her pullet eggs last yr.
This egg is oddly oval and I’m not certain I have the correct end up, but

The Egg is in the bator !!! (gotta test fertility, right)

It should hatch just after any of the Maran eggs, on or about Groundhog Day w/ the Ducks.
Can you tell how thrilled I am?”
When in doubt, lay it on it's side until the air cell becomes obvious.

Marker is fine to use. I use them all the time, along with crayons, pencils & colored pencils. Both water based & permanent markers are fine.

As for the crack: Use candle wax or melted crayon to seal the crack. It will give the chick a 50/50 chance of hatching. At this point that's about the best you can do.

Just candled. Out of the 14 cream Legbars, 5 have pronounced veining, 6 were dark on top but no veining or pronounced air pocket, 3 had a pronounced air pocket but no veining. It's day 7 so I'll have to wait another week for hopeful progress!
