Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Hiya Cosmos. I'm almost in SC. I'm closest to Augusta I guess as far as real cities are concerned. Thanks for the offer, I'm considering alternatives.
Okay, way over there! Good Luck!

I set mine in this morning. I also have the Brinsea Mini Advanced. I use Nursery Water instead of tap water to make sure no unwanted chemicals hurt the eggs. Not sure if it makes a difference, but better safe than sorry right?

Wow! I'd say you have a serious case of chicken math! ;-)
What are those black strings/white bands for? Just to secure the top layer of eggs? Or does that come w/ the Brinsea?
Yes, I have terrible chicken math skills. Those bands are rubber bands. they didn't come with the Brinsea. I secured them around the egg dividers, and then stretched them over the extra eggs. I was a little nervous, but they've been turning for 2 days now, and they have moved at all. Still, I'm thinking about making tall egg dividers out of hardware cloth, and replacing the ones in the bator to accomadate the extra eggs. But I'm not opening the bator until I candle, probably not until day 10. I'm never sure about clear eggs until day 10. And since these are Maran eggs, I might never be sure.

I'm in! I got my little eggies this morning, and put them in the incubator this evening before I went to work! I forgot to take a picture. I'm using a Brinsea 20 Advance, and I'm hoping some of you could post your incubator pics? I got all mine in, but I had a really hard time with the wires to make sure they were standing the right way and not rolling around (the eggs were all different sizes).
That's what I'm using. You can see my pic of it loaded earlier in the thread, but I don't recommend filling it as full as I did. My eggs were kind of rattling around too. I stuffed little pieces of cardboard in the gaps to keep them steady.

I'm new to the thread, but I will be setting some in the incubator tomorrow as well!!

I am setting 5 from an eBay purchase of blue copper, blue, and black copper Marans (eggs 1-5 below). I also have 2 of my own (6-7)

I use a Brinsea Mini Advance w/ Auto Turning. My first hatch was 100%, 7 out of 7. The chicks are a week old and doing great. Hoping I have similar luck this go round but realize I'm dealing with shipped eggs instead of fresh eggs.. They were shipped on Jan 2 and I received them today Jan 5. I suck at gauging anything by candling this early in the game so my efforts today were fruitless. I can't tell if they have detached cells or what.. Don't know what to look for either so... here are some pictures.

#3 looks pretty porous. It's the only 1 I would worry about at this point. Dark eggs are nearly impossible to see anything until about a week in, then you often can't see much more than the air cell expanding & a dark mass beginning to form.

Me and dblea put our 10 marans in this morning! This is our second time incubating and first time using the LG still air incubator! So for you experienced setter, when do you guys start turning eggs... I was told around day 3 or 4?

I guess you can count me in too! I just set my first batch of eggs ever and have a great deal to learn, but here's hoping that I get some chicks and not just a bunch of smelly eggs

. I pulled all of the eggs I'm trying to hatch from my Easter Eggers. My only question is on the candling - some of my eggs are darker colored and I'm worried about being able to see through the shell to check on their development (Colors range from an olive green color to a light turquoise).
These will be very difficult to candle. After about a week you should be able to see the aircell fairly easily but likely won't be able to see much more than a darkening blob in the middle of the egg if you can see anything at all. I just watch my aircells on the dark & colored eggs to make sure they are developing & the aircell is increasing in size. By about day 14 you should be able to tell if it is clear or not. A clear egg will allow light through the entire shell whereas a developing baby will block the majority of the light.

Shipped eggs you can wait 2-3 days but I start turning my own after 24 hrs.

I agree does look very porous, But dont let that discourage you. My last batch had a few porous eggs like yours and they all hatched!

My last batch was local eggs and I started turning as soon as they were in the incubator. This is my first time on shipped eggs and I have read quite a few different opinions on the amount of days to wait before turning. I think Im going to wait 5 days and then plug in my turner. But I am new to this so Im not positive.

Everyones eggs are looking great by the way Im so excited almost all of us our set. And the others will be set soon. Now the fun begins and we can be glued to the incubator with nose smudges on the window. And I cant wait for all the candling results and pics if anyone is willing to try pics during candling.
