I set eggs over the weekend with all of you as well. These were moved into my hatcher on Sunday evening. The new chick is a white Bresse, there are also Legbar, Rhodebar and a Marans egg pipping and zipping.

Did you let them hatch inside the carton? I have never heard of that before. I thought you had to lay them on their side.

I've seen a lot of people hatch in cartons. I think the benefit is that the hatching chicks can't kick the remaining eggs all over the bator. And the chicks will definitely do that. Usually with 15 minutes of hatching my first chick, all the other eggs have been rolled to the edges. But I don't like to hatch mine in cartons because I like seeing the eggs rock back and forth after they've internally pipped.

I saw where another member used dividers from a Christmas ornament box to make little cubicles for each hatching egg. That way they could move around, but the chicks didn't kick them.

I've never incubated in cartons before except for quail & I take them out & lay them down at lockdown, but I'm trying it with this batch. We'll see how it goes

I tried hatching on their side but it was exactly like Brooster said, the first chicks rolled the other eggs all over the place. I've hatched in egg cartons for about 6 months now. It seems to work very well. I do check (very quickly) the bottom of any eggs that don't have top pip holes as I've caught some ( a very small amount) with side or bottom pips. This is the first time I cut out the bottom of the egg carton as well to get more air circulation. A second Bresse is now out and a CL that looks to be a girl!

Just checked my incubator before heading to bed and realized that the sensor for my thermometer/hygrometer had fallen down to the screen floor. It was reading 99 on the floor. I moved the sensor so it was resting on top of the turner. Itwas reading 102 there! Yikes! I have no clue how hot it is running at the top of the eggs. I hope Walmart gets some thermometers in soon so I can get more accurate average temperatures. I am aiming for 102 at the top of the egg. I hope I haven't fried them :(.

Whoo hoo thanks for sharing Puglady- what a little cutie!!

I am also hatching BCM's. I am on Day 3 and just plugged in the turner a few hours ago. The temp has been a steady 100' for days now, and just as others commented, within 2 hours of turning, it rose to 102. Back down to 100 now, but watch the temps when you start to turn.

Thanks Silkie! I have hardware cloth to make a top. I was more worried about it getting too stuffy in there since all three sides are solid??
