Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Well we candled all 16 of our eggs and we got pretty good results!

of our 10 Marans we saw 3 with a lot of movement, a couple with small movement. All of them but one have gotten larger air sacs and larger dark masses since we candled on day 6. There was only one that it didn't look like anything was happening so 9/10 for our marans are good eggs.

We have a staggered hatching so we have 6 that are at day 4 so we decided to candle them just to see what was going on because some of them had funny air sacs but all the air sacs looked good when we candled and we already saw development of veins it was awesome! Our first batch we tried in december were easter eggers so they were hard to see and our marans are hard to see but now these 6 are either white or light brown its amazing what a difference we can see with the candling!

So overall results:

9/10 marans are good
5/6 mystery eggs are good (still early so maybe we can get the other one to start!

Half way there for our Marans!!!

You all talk about getting your eggs and putting them in a incubater. How does buying the fertile eggs, and then putting them under a brooding chicken?? I live in the city and can't have a rooster...

That's exactly what we did... our hen Gracie went broody and we ordered eggs of the breed we wanted and kept Gracie sitting on 'dummy eggs' until the shipped eggs got here.... then we just swapped them out and she is now on day 12 with them.

worked perfect for us.

Incubator says 9 days left. Candled all mine again this morning.. #3 definitely isn't developing. It was super porous. Cracked it open for science and it had an itty bitty embryo and a blood ring. The rest seem to be doing great and moving around and getting bigger. :)
I'm glad the rest are doing good for you!

so, where did you order yours? Trader Joes? we are on the west coast
I can't help much with West Coast egg suppliers... I got mine from an Ohio hatchery to keep the shipping time as low as I could...
I'll do a quick search though and see if I can come up with any.

I do know there is one called Ideal in Texas that many get from, but don't know what they have available right now...

It's best to try for local eggs if possible. Try craigslist for your area. The Buy Sell Trade area here works as well. I also have eggs available that I can ship as early as Tuesday if you are interested in Rainbow Layers.

My Aunt lives in California and she buys a lot of her hatching eggs on ebay. It sounded weird to me at first. But it works well for her and she has had fairly good hatch results with her shipped eggs.
You have to be careful with e-bay. I have gotten some really good eggs & some really bad ones.
