Hatch-Along - Setting eggs week of Feb 4th..anyone else?

Gosling Update:

I took the top of the shell off, then I smeared antibiotic sab onto the inner membrane with a Q tip. I can see the baby perfectly, but those bloods vessels are really intimidating. He's correctly positioned with his beak near the air cell in the lower section. I think I'll see if he pips himself first, because I don't want to hit those veins. He looks like a healthy gosling otherwise.

I took a leap and pulled the last 2eggs ....first the zip....it zipped down and drowned. The other had pipped the middle on the bottom of the egg, and probably drowned.... :( so of 7 in batch2 I have 5 for 11 total.... I feel bad because they were both doing so well...oh, well...

I internally pipped the goose egg. I was able to avoid hitting any blood vessels, but it was close. From the tip of his beak to his notril is now clear. Any farther and I would have hit a large red vein. I don't think he's breathing yet, but at least he has the access.

Thanks everyone!

He's breathing and he looks healthy, but he'll have to stay in the egg for at least another 36 hours. These next 2 days are going to be stressful...

So how are everyone's new hatchlings?

still got a dozen and mamma is getting more protective by the day. so cute to see them scurrying around the yard with her. most have wing and tail feathers in now. a few late bloomers though.

My first batch is starting to flutter and dust bathe...time to unleash the dropcloths! :) the newborns are watching them enviously through a wire barrier I put in the brooder...they don't do much at under 24 hours old....

We're hatching in our classroom too! I have one chick that should hatch sometime this week (only 1 out of our first 5 that was fertile/didn't quit) and have about 2 dozen eggs incubating for a hatch the following week! Both my students and I are both extremely nervous and excited! Good luck to everybody else "patiently" waiting!
