hatch day :)) 10/30/2012

The assortment I got included a couple of sex-link hybrid breeds, where the boys and girls are different colors. I have no idea on the others--I didn't know it was possible to tell on tiny babies, except by experts.
i think you are right i've been researching and it seems it's pretty impossible to tell till they get to be juvies. then their combs start coming in.. :(( just have to wait and see..although i'm sure my first one is a male he sure has the temper of one!

he goes around pecking everything even the tote they are in..loll and he's the one who was chasing my 2 yr old in the picture.. i've already got 6 eggs collected for my next hatch gunna try to do a bigger hatch this time.. the nice thing about florida is, is doesnt get too cold here..i see alot of posts about people not being able to do any more hatches due to weather changes! :(

Yep, we've got nice winter weather here too, but awful summers, so a lot of people wait for fall for hatching (though I have met a couple people who free-range and just let their hens raise a brood whenever they feel like it, and they seem to do okay in the heat).

Yeah, that's what I don't understand is they tell you to store eggs in cool humid place, but what about during the summer when a hen lays and then gets up wouldn't they get hot.. I'm just gunna try to store them in our storm shelter we have built here under our home. It stays nice and cool in there esp. with this nice cool weather and there should be enough moisture too! Hopefully I have at least one ROO out of the 4 so I can start collecting my own eggs but for now I'll just keep picking my inlaws..

... I'm trying to spend as much time as I can with the chicks so they are soo wild when they grow up..so far only 1 stays pretty calm when I hold it. It was the one who responded to my voice a lot when it was in the bator :))

Cute!

All of mine are out now. The last three came out at about three in the morning, waking me up. Unlike the older ones, the newborns haven't figured out that dark should mean silence. I ended up with six blue splash marans (Aspen, Goblin, Hollendaise, Ivy, Jupiter, and Kaye), two cinnamon queen girls (Boo and Chickpea), a cinnamon queen boy (Elroy), and a black star girl (Dumpling-w-I think she's buried in the pile in this picture).

OMG perfect hatch, plz give some tips, and show your incubator.

I think it was just beginner's luck, since I can think of more things I did wrong than right--we had a weekend in week two where I couldn't turn them, and they sat for several days in the post office over a holiday weekend... It's just a hovabator, the cheapest one my parents could find for a Christmas present a couple years ago.

Just lost one today, though

No idea what happened, except it seemed to be wobbling around more than the others before. So down to nine.

awwrrr so sorry

CCmarie it seems i have 1 roo and 3 hens...i found a website that shows you how to check by their wing feathers! I knew my roo was a roo before i even checked, he came out fiesty pecking things and just such a curious little guy! although my roo hurt his little leg nothing looks swollen or broke he just has a wobble i think he's gunna be fine though. he's still eating and drinking(lots) and pooing regularly as well! he's also still getting around on his own playing with the other and peeping normal so i don't think he's in excrutiating pain.. he's been my little fighter from the getgo i have faith in the little guy! gunna start my next hatch prob tomorrow!

Do you have a link to that website? I looked, but so far all I can find are tips for certain breeds/varieties...and none of them happen to be blue splash marans. I figure if there's a way to test all breeds, I could check my sexlinks to test it before looking at my marans. Good luck with your baby, and your next hatch. I'm considering starting another one (or two), but then I talk myself out of it. I'd really like a couple Delawares, and my mom mentioned that she wants to add a silkie to her flock--maybe I could get her one for Christmas or something.

Click on that and there's a part in the video that shows you the difference really well! :)) and i double checked and I actually have all hens!

It was hard for me to tell earlier by meself once my husband help me it was clear "he" was a she..So I'm hoping for a roo next round! Yes, that would be a nice gift to her! :)) you could hatch it yourself and put the baby chick in a box on x-mas and give it to her! :)) just have to time the hatch right! :p
