HATCHALONG!!!

well today is hatch day! is it odd that even though I was (and still am) exousted I havnt been able to sleep all night?

(me tired and hysterical)

ok it didnt take long but my nerve broke and I picked open the side of an egg that had the air sack to find the half decomposed remnants of a chick.

so now knowing some (maybe all) have died I pick at annother but this time what I find is not decomposing but I see is what looks like a wet chick and some yolk.

have I killed the chick by doing that! or wil it be fine? the membrane isnt punctured and the hole in the egg is about penny sized. so will it be fine? or did I kill it?! this is my first hatch and I am really upset right now. and after this one I still have 4 eggs (but I think they might be like the first I picked open)

Dont Panic

Firstly wet a paper towel in warm water. Then with you finger wet the membrane that you can see in the egg again with warm water, not too much mind, put the egg on top of the wet paper towel and put it back into the bater. I would leave them all for a few days yet. Good luck

This is my first hatch too, and it takes them some time to pip out. For instance, I had one pipping out last night, and it had a dime sized hole and it didn't break out till this morning. Don't freak, they will hatch. I have one that has a leg sticking out hehehe.

I think that you think the chick was hatching none have pipped yet or are even peeping and I am getting worried I had thought the chick in the egg had died but surprise, surprise! so I do not think it was finished absorbing the yolk because I see a good amount of yolk inside the egg and then beside the little bit of yolk I see what looks like wet chick feathers kinda like when it first comes out just under the membrane. I think I am looking at iether the back of its neck or its butt. not sure though.

did I mention that the incubator I have is just a kruddy home made one? that really isnt anything more than a plastic bin and a lamp. I actually ended up making 2 because I had the first one that is a foam box with a shop light inside a plastic bin and that (as far as I can tell without a thermometer) holds a good temp and that one is holding my second batch of 30 eggs from a friend of my moms who owns a chicken farm. (I think most of them are scrambled though!

) but the second one is for them to hatch in because I litterally had to cram the eggs in the first incubator and then still I had to put some on top of one annother so the second one has pine shavings in the bottom and a good lamp that has burned me more than once. and because it feels too cold I put some cardboard over the top to keep in some heat. I told my mother that if/when these are finished hatching and are producing good I am going to invest in a good incubator because I do not want to go through knowing that I could've done better again. I think I am going to get one of the ones off of mypetchicken.com I saw a good one that is 65 dollars that I think would work good for me.
