Hatchers Anonymous *Official Thread*

Well I thought I had pretty much every breed that I wanted. Then I went to the yankee classic yesterday. Man.............I have never seen a Langshan before. Had no clue they were huge with feathered feet. I am a sucker for feathered feet. Huge w/ feathered feet is even better. I love my Jersey giants even though they aren't grown but oh how I wanted to bring that giant sized roo home. And he was blue. Of course I also happened upon the silkies which I have always seen pics and thought they were ugly. Guess what I want now. Oh and some royal palm turkeys and definitely some call ducks. Uh-oh. Need more eggs or chickens or both.

Well my sister has a small holding with duck chickens goats rabbits dogs cats soo thought i could try a few chickens and if they dont work out they can go to my sisters menagary of pets.

~I built my coop from scratch out of recycled rubbish then i had someone on freecycle give me 2 hens but when we collected it was actually 5 there were 3 younger ones that were pushed upon me lolol they couldnt possibly be seperated.

I have been yearning for a silkie hen and you know i have not been able to get a guaranteed hen from anyone ! they are all less than 14wks here. We did pot luck and brought 2 8 wk olds sister had one too and both died at seperate addresses within days of each other so not sure what happened there. Brought a £4 auction bird 12 wk old which its turns out is a cockeral lol oops thats at my sisters now. we had to buy him a black female but she is a xbreed as she hasnt got 5 toes or the black skin but she was cheep!.

So i though it about time i did my own!! so after watching the auctions for a few weeks the cockerels all sell even if its just 50p so i thought why not try it!! So the first week i brought 3 lots of hatching silkies and to my suprise when i paid and they handed the boxes over they were 12's ooops so 36 eggs later. I made 2 incubators one having a few problems. I am down to 15 eggs with infertility at least 13 and the rest blood spots. i decided i needed another 12 in just incase. I was so temped when eggs are going for £1 its crazy i had to put my hand in my pockets and think lets see how the first lot turns out! but i'll be BACK!

~I love it i candle every night this one egg its sooo clear and i see it kicking and turning and looks like it winking at me!
my son 9yrs said dont show me that again it makes me feel sick!!!lolol strange boy and my hubby wont eat no eggs unless they are date stamped he is such a freak! if it doesnt come in shrink wrap with a label and a date he wont eat it. Im sure he thinks i am going to feed him my chickens or something! he doesnt get it! there P E T S.

I have some improvements to make on my diy incubator but i have already put my santa order in for a digital thermostat from my sister which is where it all going wrong in the diy i think. the big fat santa that comes to my house cant afford a real incubator or should i say the hubby wont intentionally help me in my bird collecting adventure !!

im Already planning which part of the garden my hubby wont miss to extend lol and the button quail oohhhh they are soo cute they went for 70p each and a muscovy duck was £1 my garden will be full! i would love to save them all from the BIRD EATERS!!

11 days to lock down . shhhh cause i didnt tell my hubby that they have to stay inside for weeks lolol oooops did i say i been married for 15 year nov maybe this year i wont be celebrating lolololol MEN they think when they say N O we are going to listen lolololololol

plecostrum, it sounds as though you are well on your way! Welcome to the group!

It is impressive that you have started out down the DIY path. I knew better than that, bought the LG, and failed a few times anyway! haha Now I think I've gone about as stupid proof as possible in the Brinsea.

Thus far, my hubby has been pretty understanding...really quite encouraging of my poultry collection. We only have six total, thus far, though, so that could all change come Spring! hehe

For the group:

What are your plans for all of these lovely babies? Do we have a few who breed to sell? Show? Just love having plenty of action in the backyard?

Maybe...but that is okay!

You can never have too many chickens...in fact, I think we all need more incubators, pens and coops.

And I hear you gryeyes on the extras getting sent, you can't just throw those away. I took my egg turner out of my Brinsea so I could fit that "extra" egg, and just hand turned.

Absolutely NO plans to show any of my chickens. No plans to sell 'em, BUT I am now interested in giving away any duplicates (or roos) that local BYCers might want for their flocks. And I do love having a colorful flock. I'd still be buying chicks at the feed store if they ever offered any of the breeds or varieties I'm hatching.

My FIRST desire was to get a Buckeye. Then a lavender orpington. Then some bantam cochins. Then Jersey Giants. The list continues....

Hi My name is Tyler

,
I have a hatching problem.
I just got an incubator this summer and have hatched out over 70 quail, and around 60 chicks..
I do it to pick out the best ones to keep for bredding and to sell those I don't or think will better suit someone else.
*sigh* that's my story.

My addiction is for my quail ... I got my 1st Button pair in July ( this year ), the female started laying eggs a few weeks after I got her and I set a batch of 6 eggs in the bator .. due to a power outage non hatched. The same day I stuck 6 more eggs in the bator, 3 of those hatched. I kept all of those. Then I set another batch in, 5 hatched, kepted 3 of those I sold the rest, then I set another half dozen eggs in the bator 4 of those hatched but 1 died and I sold the remaining 3 to a Pet shop .... sadly the pet shop owner emailed me and said they had all died.

Then I ordered 45 eggs from FeatheredObsessions ( BYC'er ), 2 were broken upon arrival, 11 hatched all the rest rotten. Now I'm up to 19 buttons, and I'm planning on getting a brand new bator next spring and I plan on hatching abunch out.
Yes .. I am addicted to chickens, too ... but I try to "Tie Down" that addiction due to parents not wanting more chickens and they're threatening to narrow it down to 20 birds ...

.... at the moment I'm up to 80 +

There .. that is my story .... oh, did I mention I had guineas ...
