The elders call this disease the sleeper disease... that's how I can translate it at least.. lol
so strange I hope your new babies hatch can't imagine losing that many and not having an answer. I hope the future bring you answers and a cure.

Hi all.... I set 9 hopefully fertile eggs under my broody in the profile pic..... yes she went broody again even late in the year.... she started laying again while her lone surviving chick from a predator attack was still following her.. she was laying outside the coop between vegetation..... and her 10 weeks old stayed with her wherever she went... she chased him off for a few days and ignored him a bit... then she started caring for him again even though he was nearly as big as her and scratching around hor him and protecting him.... then she went broody in her laying spot a few days ago... I was considering the idea of giving her eggs or not... and a couple of days ago I decided I'd love some more chicks and young pullets to lay next year.... so I hidden her last egg before going broody and an egg from my other laying hen (the others are old and only lay in spring) today I collected another egg from the laying hen.... but couldn't wait longer to set her.... so I went to our old lady neighbor.... she didn't have any eggs... (chickens here stop laying in molting season and in colder weather. ... and we're like that now) so I went to another lady and she topd me she only have 4... and they need them for food consumption... but she loves me and told me to wait and she'll check if she has any in the coop... and she came back with six eggs... I wanted to give her money sooo bad... but she didn't accept in anyway... I was happy I got the eggs I needed... so I put them in a special nest box for broodies and got my broody and showed her the eggs.. she was soo excited she has eggs.... but she didn't sit for long because she wanted to stay in her spot wich is dangerous for her and the eggs... so I put the box in her spot and she instantly covered them properly and was soo happy... at dawn I replaced her with the box to the coop and she didn't like it first but kept brooding them and setteled as this was her old brooding spot too.... hopefully tomorrow she won't get off the nest.... fingers crossed for her...
Sorry for the long story but I was soooo excited and wanted to share it with you... and I took some huge fresh mangoes for the nice old lady from our mango tree.... hope some of you guys have a hatch date that is near mine.....
Thanks again for reading...
Majd....

Couldnt wish none of my girls into being broody but I set 33 eggs in the brooder hoping for a 50% hatch at least for next years hens... Due around about the 25-26th.... First time using an incubator... My favorite hen went broody several months ago and as we didnt have a roo we decided it was a grand time to get one, put an ad on craigslist for one and the lady who contacted me also donated 5 fertile eggs for my hen.. She hatched all all five 19 days later and just this week decided to not be momma anymore.. The chicks are 7 weeks old and doing fine on their own, worse time is bedtime when they are trying to find a place to roost and get run off... Momma got pretty harsh with them last night when they kept trying to get under her. Never have raised chicks myself, going to be an interesting venture :)

Naw, Momma doing what momma hens do, they go back to the flock at 6-7 weeks normally (at least thats what I have read) babies are part of the flock, they just are at the bottom of that flock lol...I wouldnt seperate them now unless one was killed.
My husband has spent the summer expanding the coops and making a rabbit house, but he wanted as much as i do to raise our own meat, atleast what we can on our acre, Going to raise a couple Turkeys next year..
My eggs are going to be barnyard mutts lol, Got a Roo that is Dominique/Silkie and he has covered all my Australorps, EE's and the Heritage White. So its going to be kinda interesting what comes out of those eggs :)

He will also be building another coop tho because we want to raise chicks just for meat and those we would keep seperate and penned

Best of luck AmericanMom.... hope all goes well with much more than 50% hatch rate.... we need pics when the big day arrives...

Updates... the egg that has a detached air sac didn't grow any embryo at all... and one of the egg was infertile... so we're down to 7 eggs... I was upset that the largest egg had a detached air sac and didn't grow... I wanted big layers...

The lady that I got 6 eggs from had chickens with fluffs on their heads... hoping for some of those too..
