Hatchery Question

4 sq ft. Per bird is optimal. Too little space inside if they spend a lot cooper and penned leads to problems, but if you plan to free range all day and only keep them enclosed at night 2 sq may work for you.

I live in the city so they will have an enclosed run both to keep predators out and to keep them confined to one space in the rear yard. I have a 10x10 area that I am thinking of using, so I guess a 4x6 raised coop with a 10x10 enclosed run should be sufficient?

I think you'll be happy with Meyer. I've placed several orders with them, and have been happy with each one. Good luck - and update with photos when you get the chicks.

UPDATE:

I received my order of 6 chicks from Meyer today...all perfectly healthy and happy! I ordered:

1 - Silver-Laced Wyandotte
1 - Buff Orpington
4 - Random Mixed Breed Brown Egg Layers

I think I received:

1 - Silver-Laced Wyandotte - she appears to have white markings on her back and clean pink legs.
2 - Plymouth Barred Rock - similar in appearance to the above without the white markings on the back and the legs are tinged with black.
2 - Buff Orpington
1 - no idea...guessing from the coloration a Red Sexlink or some variation thereof...

feel free to change my mind...these are my first chickens ever and I am quite a novice!

I also realized how difficult they are to photograph because they liked to move alot! :)
