Hatching buddies! Set eggs July 8, 2011

Mine are okay I guess. My husband is watching them for me while I am on a trip to PA. I am thinking about going home early just so I can candle my eggs. I am visiting family. They all think I have gone a little chicken crazy. Sometimes my chicks are the only things that really make sense....

Thanks for keeping us going:

So, of the 6 we put under our broody, one was demolished on day 2 (by the hen) and one was demolished by me!! on day 7!
The one I wrecked was viable! So, the remaining 4 should be little chicks by the 29th!!! (wishful thinking!)...............

Well- my friend (who the silkie eggs are for) freaked me out with exploding egg horror stories & what could happen to my good eggs if one did that...... so I started pitching at day 7 with these guys (and lets face it- 80 eggs in 1 bater is ALOT!! still had room on the grid though) So I pitched 10 clear ones last night, and tonight........

Bater is down another 26 eggs- all but 2 were silkie eggs Only ? eggs in there now are 2 silkie, 1 D'Unccl (& the dozen 3 day in the bater GL/Tolbunt eggs- did candle them tonight there are 5 for sure developing- those got a green stripe) Will recheck them & the 3 ? eggs in a few more days. Pitched 24 silkie, 1 Tolbunt (blood ring- was my ? egg), & 1 D'Unccle egg way darker than the other D'Unccle eggs & no movement.

The lady I got the 36 silkie eggs from sent me that many cause she didn't know how many would be good- she was tossing them in coffee cans, putting some in her baters, etc. She said some could have been between a week or two old. So she sent all the splash pen & blue pen eggs she had left (19 splash, 17 blue) There are 4 good splash eggs, & 12 good blue eggs- plus the 2 ? blue eggs- so 20 have been pitched for being clear or having blood rings tonight. (no veining but the dark/bright ring around the egg) And 16 of hers are left in the bater.

So what's left:

Set 1st mailed eggs on 7/9 pm:
4 D'Unccle eggs left (3 good, 1 ?)
9 D'Unccle
5 Silkie- all stayed clear
Looks like no silkies are growing from this batch & 3- 5 D'Unccles are I got them for the Silkies......
will be pitching the non growing silkies tonight- pitched 4 D'Unccle & 1 lighter shelled silkie egg last night

Set p/u eggs on 7/10:
12 Tolbunt Polish & 16 Silkie eggs left (2 silkie eggs are ?)
18 Tolbunt Polish (12 forming great) Have 1 other that may be good- it is still in there - pitched 5 clears last night
36 silkie eggs (really- asked for a dozen- this is what I get, she didn't know the age of the eggs- so I took them all
(being candled tonight & will be pitching the non growers tonight as well)

Set mailed eggs 7/14:
12 GL/Tolbunt Polish eggs (did peek- 5 for sure going- but too soon to say on others)

Gotta say- 44 eggs is still alot!!!

I crunched one of mine with the bater lid...... it was a clear one though!!!

I do have a cracked one in there that is taped- it's doing great & forming still (came cracked- only visible at candling, not when you look at it)

Heres hoping for 4 little ones for you!!!

I'm not sure to be honest. Maybe post a thread about it to see if someone knows?

4 out of 12 if the box was banged up in shipping is pretty good!!!

My 1 shipped batch was 14 eggs- came packed fine..... and only 3 are for sure good- a 4th one is a maybe. None of the ones left in that batch were what I ordered them for!! I was after Silkies for my friend- none of the 5 silkie eggs in that batch grew at all- just stayed clear.

It was the 1st time I had shipped eggs. I have a 2nd batch of shipped eggs in there too now. But they are only 3 days along- so too early to say for sure on them. (I peeked tonight..... 5 look like they are growing- but too early to count them still- good or bad)

I am planning on coming home Wed. I am so excited. My husband keeps teasing me saying he is going to candle and not tell the results... Lol. I told him hands off the eggs!

In a way I envy you- when you come home they will be ready to candle & pitch the bad ones!!!! I want to know what is going on with mine..... I keep making myself leave them alone!! "Don't touch the lid", "Don't touch the lid", "Don't touch the lid"...........

So now I can recheck the 3 ? eggs on Thurs & the GL/ Tolbunts...... but til then- only touch to turn (get to open lid then- on a turning grid- I just move the lever myself & open to make sure the eggs are ALL turned- some want to stand up tall)

I'll recandle everyone else on the 22, & then when they go for lockdown on the 27th.......... But I want to play with the chicks now

I AM HOME!!! I finally got to candle my eggs.

Here is what is developing:

3 out of 8 of the Swedish Flower Hens
3 out of 4 of the Silver Sussex
4 out of 4 of my Lavender Orpington

I am so bummed about the Swedish Flower Hens! Should I break them open and see? Or is that really messy?

I didn't- I just put them in egg cartons & pitched them. I'm not sure what to look for once they were open. The ones I pitched either were still clear, or had no veins- just the blood ring.

Sorry to hear about your Swedish Flowers- that sucks. Where they shipped?

My first batch of shipped ones I have 4 of the 16 being good (well 3 are and 1 is ???) Of course the silkies I picked up (egg age unknown- that day to 11 days old she said) there are 15 out of 36.

But my eggs (Tolbunt Polish) seem to have good rates!!! The ones I drove to OH for 12 of the 18 are still good, and the shipped ones I know 6 are good so far- they are being recandled this weekend for pitching the non thrivers!!

At least your Silver Sussex & Lavender Orpingtons have a great rate!!!!
