Hatching buddies! Set eggs July 8, 2011

The eggs shipped on Tuesday and I didn't get them until Friday (same week). Was supposed to be overnight shipping. I live in TN. and the eggs where just 5 hours away in GA. Of course it was hot out and that might have a lot to do with it. 5 of the 6 eggs that didn't develop are clear. Only one with a red ring... not sure if that means anything or not.
I guess 10 out of 16 isn't bad.

The red ring is a blood ring- if what I've read up on them is true: the embryo started to develop, then died. People have differant reasons for them- sometimes a hen hid it for a day or 2 before being pulled out of the nest, sometimes they start incubating from being too hot during shipping/ storage, etc. Sometimes they just fade out after a few days in the bater.

My picked up (age unknown) silkie eggs had alot of ones with blood rings. She was filling coffee cans with them when she collected them and where they were sitting & for how long I don't know..... but I only wanted 12 and she brought 36.... and 15 are good- so I'm still golden

10 out of 16 is good........ it still sucks that the bulk of the bad ones were the bulk of one breed though.

In a way I envy you- when you come home they will be ready to candle & pitch the bad ones!!!! I want to know what is going on with mine..... I keep making myself leave them alone!! "Don't touch the lid", "Don't touch the lid", "Don't touch the lid"...........

So now I can recheck the 3 ? eggs on Thurs & the GL/ Tolbunts...... but til then- only touch to turn (get to open lid then- on a turning grid- I just move the lever myself & open to make sure the eggs are ALL turned- some want to stand up tall)

I'll recandle everyone else on the 22, & then when they go for lockdown on the 27th.......... But I want to play with the chicks now

Only 6 of the GL/Tolbunts are developing- so I pitched them last night. I also double checked my taped Tolbunt egg..... he died. I grab a egg to compare, and was like..... hmmm floating baby & no veins- I'll check the other 10- those ten are going fine. So I pitched the 2 quiters. They were suppose to be recandled tonight- so they were done a night early.

When I rechecked my D'unncles (were 4 eggs- peeked at the others to see where they were to compare) only 2 are good- the one I questioned wasn't a surprise, but there was another one I thought was. Both were quiters from at least a few days ago.

I'll redo the silkie eggs over the weekend (did pitch 1 of the ? silkie eggs- other one was moving) I didn't feel like checking them after I found 2 (1 Tolbunt & 1 D'Unccle) that had quit with no reason I can think of. The other eggs pitched I had questioned if they were good- and my cracked egg I knew had a good chance of quiting.

I wonder if the a/c I got to cool drop the humidity is causing an issue- or if this is normal (I know Jenny always pitched a couple quiters on 2nd candling or Lockdown).

So far all of the eggs have piped and looking like a 100% hatch rate on my first try !! So exited !!

So, now I have 5 broodies! yikes! they have kept all of the fertile eggs warm I think.
The 6 that should be hatched on 7/30 are now just 2! but the additional 9 due next week

so the 2 remaining eggs (from 6 originally placed) are chirping inside their eggs. I've closed off that nesting box and Mother is sitting nicely on them.

the others that are due next friday 8/5, I took a look at this morning and one had a quarter size hole in it!! with a 2 week old embryo! aaarrrrgggg!

chickens were going in and out of that box, laying etc. just put a stop to that this morning!

so how is everyone doing??
