I'm to the point of crying. I've had a bad headache today, so didn't check the incubator, which usually isn't a problem, but it just so happened to spike to 122. All 90 eggs are dead! I had my turkeys' first eggs, the last hopes of pekin duck eggs from my now dead drake, an assortment of eggs from the chicken ladies, and of course paint silkies, hen's choice silkies from the same person, my buff D'Uccles and BCM's from Ayeupchuck! Ninety babies in there and all dead now.

I feel so selfish for not checking it this morning. I know they're "just eggs" but I had just pulled all of the infertiles, so there were two flats of definitely fertile eggs, most close to hatch, plus all of the now grey blobs that were going to be babies in the newly set eggs. I feel like a mass chick murderer.
so sorry, your health needs to come first and you cant help it if you are under the weather.

that really sucks.
hugs you.

Yeah, I really like living in the woods. no one can SEE us to complain. but we also are zoned ag and have 9 acres, which puts us in the "over 5 acres" needed to actually own animals in our county. nobody can say nuthin'!

Plus our neighbors are nice. They like us and we like them. after hearing about y'all neighbors, I am really thankful!

Yes
Yes open air is key. I used to just leave everyone in the locked run with a roof, until the coons just started ripping the chickens out through the chain link. Now I lock them up in the two small coops, but I need more. And I had no where to separate breeders. It is going to be REALLY hard for me to not allow birds to free range everyday all day long. Before it wasn't a problem- I only had cochin roosters that where mature.
I paid $150 today for all the supplies to section off part of the run, and build the roosting box. I drew up plans to make a four section breeding pen, and I priced it out to cost me $400. I will ask for lowes GCs for my birthday and save all chick/egg sales to build it, since hubby refuses to finance my chicken expansion any more!!

Go on Craigslist and look under the "Materials" section. I have found a ton of used wood, wire and even cypress lumber on there.

:( I'm so angry with myself. Headache or not, it's no excuse to lose all those babies. I took care of everyone else, wouldn't have taken any effort to just look at the darn incubator.
