Quote: all pens will have exterior doors to come and go from the yard. One pen will have an interior door into the center. Nest boxes will mounted interior so once you step into the center you will be on paver stones and able to collect all eggs in one location, as well as refill feeders from the center location. Solid roof........ 6' high at the outside edge and 8' high at the interior.

My brooders are mad out of wood. I have always kept them cleaned out regularly. I read yesterday, that I should bleach them once a week - what do you all think? Would bleach hurt the next batch of chicks?

I like Oxine for my incubators- kills more stuff than bleach and is safe for chickens. After I clean/ disinfect with Oxine I mix a little in with the water- it keeps the incubator fresh and the nasties down. There are some people who give shipped eggs a quick cold oxine bath before incubating because it supposedly kills Mg and anything that can be transmitted from the egg shell. I have never tried this but there are articles on BYC about how to do it and hatch rates etc...

As far as disinfecting goes I have been using it for about a year now and it works great for me. Before that my hatcher would get just plain nasty

I know you would lose a pen, but I would make one as the path to the center so I don't have to walk through a pen to get eggs or feed. Just a thought. I personally don't like to walk in the pens unless I have to.

I actually dont mind being in the pens since we feed once a day its not too bad. Plus with hurricanes and tropical storms framed all the way around will be stronger.

LOVE Oxine. I use it in the pens and even in the runs on the ground. Every time I move birds to a new pen it gets sprayed with Oxine. It will work on the ground and eventually turns into SALT.
I thought salt was bad for chickens
