so how do talk keep you're chicks identified when putting all breeds together? i've got bands but don't like using till they are older...can food coloring bee used on their down without hurting them? prob stupid question
Some could, but I wouldn't use red or orange, as that would make them more likely to get pecked. The tiny cable ties might be better. Leave some growing space and trim the end off. Remember to remove them before they get tight! I have trouble putting bands on the chicks, so I'm using cable ties until they're old enough for flat bandettes.

Separate hatching trays, brooders for them. Then leg bands (any type but spiral, (nasty things) but zip ties are available to order in large quantities and in all sorts of colors too.

Since there was talk of an ice storm.......here is a pic from a storm we had in '07...in the foreground you can see the ice on a bush near the ground...it was about 3/4 of an inch at the worst.....can't fathom how 2 inches would look.....ours didn't cause any damage and was very beautiful.

1000

...and one of a grass plant....it was amazing to me the detail the ice created around the seed heads...like those sugar crystal candies......

Now that is beautiful. Our ice storm comes as a result of the inversion. Pollution gets trapped here and there is no sun and nothing but grey. Our air pollution is three times higher than the recommended highest air quality level (not sure how to phrase that). I love UT, but I hate Salt Lake City in the winter. Snow is never white and clear and the winter sky is non existent. Every so often we get a good storm and it clears everything up and the world is beautiful again. All this rambling is telling me that I need to go up in the mountains and see the sun again,

Should I be worried about clear eggs? Last month I got 8/8 clear on a swap. Now i have one swap 4/9 clear and one purchase 9/13 clear. Are they freezing or fertility issues?
Yes i think the weather is a huge factor right now. i had the same thing happen lot of clears usually have maybe 2 in 14 eggs..... Shipping is terrible anyway on fertile eggs...and then the cold. & freezing ..BAD
The trucks are often loaded up and sit in the yard loaded until they are hooked up the next day to a cab then shipped
If its 15 out your eggs will be 15 in the trailer too after a while ...... frozen.
TRailers I believe are just thin metal and not insulated like your car to keep the weigh of the trialer low i gues less gasm weight is in the load.. ..
Anyway .It really isnt a good time to get eggs until its a little warmer...... but we do it anyway LOL..

Yesterday was bath day for most of the chickens going to the show today. Despite having to get 24 birds done in 4 hours, I had to run to the house for the camera.

I was trying to make the work a bit more fun while washing his crest, I don't think he was too happy. Shall we name him PeeWee Herman?

And DH is a real trooper, I'd wash a serama and pass it over, here was half the set.
