Hi all. My local Wal-Mart carries something similiar. They are black and the opening is a bit smaller. The overall size is close to COF's & they come with a lid & are stackable. I paid about $15 for mine and use it as a nest box. Just a thought if HD doesn't have them

Heat Lamps - When do you all shut off the heat lamps? I worry so much about cold chickens. I keep light on almost everything. My elect. bill for the barn last month was more than the house. I have had lamps on my Seramas since October.

Wow to the electricity bill! I can't provide much help because I don't have too many occasions where a heat lamp is necessary. I think we've only dropped to 32 about 3 times so far. I use Ecoglows for the babies until they are fully feathered. I do have heat lamps in all the roost areas, but I only use them if the birds are running around in the rain during the day (silly things) and the night temps are going to be pretty chilly. Wet feathers aren't very good insulation lol!

I have mine is set to come on at 10 and off at 20 degrees. The chickens are fine in there... Its me that worries. I went back and forth for quite awhile as to will i or wont i put a heat source in the coop. Well,,, when it got to be 10 degrees and colder, my heart won out over my head. They are pretty snuggly in the coop with lots of extra hay. They seem to still prefer the roost, and I nevver even saw them actually sit under it.... I watch the chick-a-dees from my window and remember they dont have heat, or a nice coop either.....

We insulated the part of the barn where the chickens are (a space about 35x20 where I keep breeding pens) and the coops (where they have a door to come and go-except at night) and even when the temps stay in the 20's it is usually 40 degrees in the barn. I worry when I take them out of the brooders!!

I am with you on the brooder issue - I wont hatch chicks til spring. My DH would have a fit if I had them all in the house for 6 - 8 weeks! I, on the other hand, would think it a world of fun!!

It's only fun for awhile, then the stinky butts quickly wear out their welcome. I can't wait to get them all out of the house. I have 15 in the living quarters and about a dozen in the basement. Once we move, we'll be building brooder suites OUTSIDE!
