Just went out to the coop and what did I find (lying on the ground rather than in the nesting box, but hey)? My first pullet egg!![]()
My cuckoo marans/white rock cross has laid her first egg! It's little but not teeny, about as dark as her mom's but it has speckling on itShe's five months and one week old today. Her brothers were all big enough to slaughter at 12 weeks, and pretty meaty. I want to give her some time to settle into a routine and see how she lays and how large her eggs look to be before I decide for sure, but I think I may just have to hatch myself out some more utility layers!

was building new pens today and well...i was a dummy and accidentally put a staple thru My finger with the air compressor staple gun! it hurts...but those pens sure are looking purdy!
Did that once with a regular staple gun when I was like 14. Could not imagine doing it with an airgun. I remember I was to afraid to tell my mother so I pried it out with a screwdriver just enough so that I could pull it out with a pair of pliers.was building new pens today and well...i was a dummy and accidentally put a staple thru My finger with the air compressor staple gun! it hurts...but those pens sure are looking purdy!
While I completely agree with survival of the fitest...I have no choice but to use a heat source for -40 below here! Its only a few days each winter...and mostly -30 thats an extreme weather condition and for that they need heat...when it gets above -15 -10 heaters go off...
It was last spring. I had gotten my Ams and they had started to lay. I was hatching EVERYTHING so I could get a jump on chicks. I was splitting the Ams with Hot2Pot I could not afford them all. Anyway. It was my second hatch of them. I had SBEL and Ams and maybe something else. Had a near 100% hatch. 18 chicks 3-4 were lavenders. I was so excited to get some lavenders. Anyway it was getting late and I decided to leave them in the hatcher over night. Came in the next morning, looked at all the chicks DEAD everyoneit was 118 in the hatcher. Hubby had not come in to the shop, he was outside so I stepped out and told him and he thought I was kidding.
Why would I joke about dead chicks??????? It was a sad sad sad day. It was the END of the WHT. I may have had to do one more hatch with it. But it was replaced ASAP with a digital. The cost of losing the chicks was WAY more than the digital thermostat. It has worked PERFECT since. I have extras around just in case.... takes too long to get here in an emergency.![]()
My chickens love mice, too... It is funny to watch them chase each other around for the best part of the 'treat'' ewSo I'm sure some of you will think me crazy but we raise mice to feed my 2 snakes. It's cheaper and I get healthier mice then what the pet stores sell. I have 2 breeding females and just added a third. Needless to say 2 snakes don't eat that many mice. Any extras are put down and feed off to either the dog (only one will eat them) or the chickens. So today I put 3 small mice down and feed them to the chickens. It was quite a hoot watching the carnivore side of them come out.
Yay!!!I couldn't understand why my chicks were making so much noise a couple of hours ago.It was dark in their room and they should have been asleep. Turns out, my NYD chicks WERE asleep. but the 3 just hatched blue Orps were making all the racket!![]()
