Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Okay, it's business time. The multiple big recent losses we've had....MG, then foxes, and now dogs, has made hubby determined to turn this place into a proper business rather than a hobby farm. Those of you who already are running businesses instead of hobbies, I'd like a bit of guidance if you can. Starting with record keeping...what itemized things do you keep track of? Expenses, yes, but how detailed do you itemize? How do you categorize your birds? Breed, age, sex, all of the above? It's the perfect time of year to start the paperwork organization, but I'd like to get it set up as close as possible to what we will maintain. I expect to have to do some tweaking, but the better the beginning, the better the ending.

Those willing to offer advice, you can certainly pm, but I'm willing to bet you'd have others besides me interested in your organization if you'd care to post publicly.

Hey guys, if anyone is interested in a side swap here is what I have

13 silkie eggs (black, blue, white, partridge/red
5 bb red old english game (not bantams)
2 black dutch bantams
2 turkey eggs (from my bourbon red pen- BR tom, 2 BR hens, 2 bronze hens, and 2 dark brown with cream in wings and tailfeathers hens. Not sure what these hens are even though I hatched them out of my birds, not crossed just dont know which turks they came out of)
You will get these plus whatever is layed tomorrow, will mail out wed. I would like spring eggs so if interested please pm me with your offers

all the chickens are penned seperate so they are pure

I'd be interested, too. Plants and honey we've done for a while, but chickens are rather new and weren't covered in my horticulture classes.

I do great with my day olds and started ones on craigslist. I don't ship day old serama as they are too small to ship and don't ship well.

There are certain breeds that don't sell good on craigslist by me like: OEGB, Bantam Cochins & Runner Ducks

Around our area, people do not want to pay over $15.00 to a trio. Chicks sell for about $2.50 each. That is why I thought about selling a few adults and then sell eggs from the ones I keep and hatch out the eggs I don't sell and then sell them once they are old enough to ship. I really like them and enjoy them very much, but if I am not going to be able to move some of them I may need to rethink my game plan....

I had to cull the cross beaked chick.  I had so many die and this fluffed up and was doing well health wise.  But he has severe cross beak, missing an eye and the other did not open so not sure there, his head was shaped weird and he could not stand.  He was the first I have ever had to cull. 

I'm sorry you haven't had good luck hatching the OEs. I wonder if perhaps they got just cold enough during shipment to make them not develop correctly. I'll send you more when I send you the other eggs (When it gets warmer). I have hatched out only a few of the OE, but they haven't had any problems.

Did any of the SFH hatch? I know mine are hatching a day or 2 behind my other breeds.

I can sell my extra males for $5 ea. My day olds for $3 and my started young ones that are 1-2 weeks old for $5 ea. I can sell a pair for $25 So as long as they can pay for there feed I keep them

I have 4 pens right now. 2 pairs of smooth. a trio of frizzle roo over smooth hens, a Silkie roo over 5 girls, a silkie roo over 3 silkie girls 1 chocolate smooth girl, 1 chocolate frizzle girl & 1 Dun/Kahki girl

Bad chicken days the last 2 days. Went in the coop yesterday to find my only gold laced orp pullet from GFF dead. Don't know why. Everything else is fine. So there goes my SL orp project I was going to start. It'll be another year for that.
I was waiting on some people that were supposed to come out and look at a pair of chickens, so I guess I was trying to hurry. And being upset about my GLO. I always check and am careful when I put the waterer down in the baby pen, they are quick. Well anyway, guess I was distracted. I killed one of my MF bantam cochins. Out of all I tried to hatch last year, I only ended up with 2. Thought I had 2 pullets, but tonight when I found HIM, I noticed he was a cockerel. They were so cute. I mean I still have the one, but now she is by herself. These were my little pets, so friendly. Sometimes I just want to give up.

And to top it off the people never showed up, called or emailed, after emailing me endlessly on Friday. Stupid craigslist people. Ugh

I'm so sorry! I know it will eventually happen, but I haven't had to cull a newly-hatched chick before. You made the right decision.
