Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Been counting chickens again.... I'm trying to figure out to make more room. I currently have 5 Serama breeding pens with 1 rooster and 3 hens in each. They do not sell well around our area but I have been selling eggs, but when they are laying at their best many eggs go unused. Do you all think the "hay-day" of Seramas are over and I should downsize them? I have worked hard to get really nice birds. It has taken 3 years to get here. BUT - if they are on the way "out" maybe I should sell a couple of my pens now. What do you all think??? I do not have a Serama that is over a size "B".

Mine sell like hotcakes around here. People love the chicks and the muscovy ducklings. I can't keep enough in stock. I guess it just depends on the area.

It was nice meeting you too today. I can't believe how good he acted around though. I got the babies home safe and sound and gave them some formented chick food they dug right in.

There so cute, I'll let you know what the marans turn out to be. Hoping a pair

I think it's as simple as I like kids, and they usually like me back

I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya -- it's just nice to know they have a good home!

When I went to see Jon Grice, he sent me home with a dressed Bresse. I roasted it tonight. I was thinking of brining it but I wanted to taste it as is.

I think the texture and flavor is very much like goose. It even has goose like bones, very light and hard.

The only sad part was the skin was tough. I love snacking on the chicken skin. Saved me a bunch of calories though.

Next time brine and butter. Yum!

Do you think I could sell day old chicks online somewhere? I have no idea where to start to advertise them.....

I do great with my day olds and started ones on craigslist. I don't ship day old serama as they are too small to ship and don't ship well.

There are certain breeds that don't sell good on craigslist by me like: OEGB, Bantam Cochins & Runner Ducks

So sorry Susan for your losses. You know I have GLO which hopefully will be laying soon.

I have had the same thing happen with Craigslist. Drives you crazy but every now and again I have met some really great people.
:( Susan
X3 or 4? or 5? I've lost count even here! On CL people. I met some great people, but id say 1/2 or so show. The more they ask you to hold it, the less they are likely to come. Of course some of the nicest chicken people i have met are cl people who did not show up the first time or so, so I do it anyway, ha.
I had to cull the cross beaked chick. I had so many die and this fluffed up and was doing well health wise. But he has severe cross beak, missing an eye and the other did not open so not sure there, his head was shaped weird and he could not stand. He was the first I have ever had to cull.

I'm so sorry, culling is hard. I usually make DH do it, he doesn't like to see me cry so he will do the chicks. The worst was one time a animal broke into my pen ( under my window) and I had to put down 2 badly injured juvie roosters right then and there, they were not going to live and in immense pain. I ended up covered in blood, but knew I saved them from a worse death. I like to remember quick and painless is better then slow and painful.
Well, dang it, the kids were NOT okay. I have a skunk that's picked off a few of my chickens over the months and tonight it killed my one Jersey giant. I need a kill trap. And to build a coop not infiltratable by wildlife, but I want this sucker DEAD. Anyone have any suggestions?
Wet cat food in the trap for skunks. And remember that it can still release spray after its passed so be careful. and DO NOT feed it to your BSF or mealworms! If they a re digging in. bury wire around or electric fence.

Can you make one of them box traps. Not sure exactly how to do it myself. I can't wait to see how them cochins grow out.

I'm looking for directions online right now. I want that sucker dead. He killed one of my Delawares, too. And me too on the cochins! I'm glad I kept one, just for fun, but since I don't want to breed them it really didn't make sense to keep and feed the whole bunch of 'em :)

Okay, it's business time. The multiple big recent losses we've had....MG, then foxes, and now dogs, has made hubby determined to turn this place into a proper business rather than a hobby farm. Those of you who already are running businesses instead of hobbies, I'd like a bit of guidance if you can. Starting with record keeping...what itemized things do you keep track of? Expenses, yes, but how detailed do you itemize? How do you categorize your birds? Breed, age, sex, all of the above? It's the perfect time of year to start the paperwork organization, but I'd like to get it set up as close as possible to what we will maintain. I expect to have to do some tweaking, but the better the beginning, the better the ending.

Those willing to offer advice, you can certainly pm, but I'm willing to bet you'd have others besides me interested in your organization if you'd care to post publicly.

Thanks in advance,
Meg
