BM6.................. I would be searching for a hidden nest, I know people north of you with eggs now. Have you checked the girls to see how close they are to laying?

Sophia left them out this morning and found FOUR duck eggs-from 3 ducks!

Unfortunately, I bumped her when I was carrying Shannon's carseat and diaper bag in the door, and she dropped one. There is still good news about that, though-it is definitely fertile!

I knew they weren't laying-I didn't let them out yesterday, because it was so cold and windy, and they have no place to hide their eggs.

Hi everyone! :frow

Hope all is well. Things should be MUCH calmer at our household as of wed. I have a bunch if babies that are hatching.

For those who hatch in cartons/baskets, do you ever have issues with chicks standing or sleeping on top of others that are hatching preventing them from hatching out? Or do you find that it's not an issue because they mor quite frequently? I think I may have too many eggs in one basket and am tempted to pull chicks out but I know there are eggs that have externally pipped.... Any advice? Leave them or remove them quickly and mist the remainders with warm water???

Thank you guys for all of your wishes and kind words. You guys are the best. I will continue to hope for the best. I guess the upside is that I used my intense frustration and sadness to propel me into buying a Sportsman, it's on the way. Compliments of Uncle Sam releasing some of my hard earned cash. Can someone remind me of what you breed to get a Super Blue Egg Layer?

I believe a blue egg layer such as Ameraucana crossed with White Leghorn.

MZ its not to tell if they are laying, Its a check to see if they are close to or could be laying. The pelvic bones open when they are close to or arelaying and close together at the end of laying season

Hmm...I wonder if there's a tutorial for checking?

not that I am aware of. To my knowledge I am the only one checking like this lol

My mother used to check by catching up the hen or duck, and seeing how many fingers she could lay between the pelvic bones. The wider the pelvis the more likely they are laying or about to. And the cloacal membranes should be looser and softer, too. I do use the how-many-fingers-wide technique when layers are not producing. I've gotten a few wrong that way too, but not many. Maybe half a dozen sent to freezer camp when they were still laying. That's over the last ten years, so not too bad.

Well yesterday I finally got the 4 1/2 week olds out of the brooder boxes and into their coop-for-now coop. I've got one little roo that is being a total butt to the rest of the little ones. I know their working on the pecking order after being reintroduced to each other after being seperated in the brooder boxes. I did try and rotate who was in each box every few days but that didn't seem to help. The one is chashing the others and pecking at heads and the bunch of black one are kind of huddled in a corner in fear i think, because it's plenty warm in there. How long should I give to let them work it our before I intervene, and would anyone have any suggestions? It cracks me up that all the light colored ones seem to be dominant and the darker ones are submissive.
