So my incubator seems to definitely be too low. Even with the water insulation around the thermometer i still only get 95 inside. It terrifies me to have to set it at 104 on the top to get the inside to read 99. I put the eggs from crfarms in my mini but I have partridge brahma coming next week...really really really want these guys to hatch and I am not sure what I should do.

Quote: yep, I think its an old technique and not something people do or know unless passed down to them. 3 fingers a goose is likely laying, 4 if they arent laying now they will be any time.

speaking of, checked our 2012 buff girl last night, warned hubby to check her house closely all weekend. She laid today

she is only 3 days behind her momma for first eggs of the year. 1 more sebbie pen to start laying now

I usually given them a day or 2 to work it out, sometimes it requires taking out the meanest ones to let the others get comfortable and then putting the naughty ones back in.. just my experience anyway... Wow gabblebabble, those BR's are beautiful, I was never a big fan of Rocks until I saw some that weren't hatchery, what amazingly beautiful birds!!

Profti, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for good results for you. In jan I had a bator get unplugged and lost the whole lot, so I feel your pain and worry. Mine were not as far along though. If they are moving they should still be fine. I will think good thoughts for you.

I think they are beautiful birds!! Are they cold hardy?? I'll do a side swap with you later this spring once I have fulfilled my other swaps?? Oh yes, and Profti, don't give up on those eggs!!

Well yesterday I finally got the 4 1/2 week olds out of the brooder boxes and into their coop-for-now coop. I've got one little roo that is being a total butt to the rest of the little ones. I know their working on the pecking order after being reintroduced to each other after being seperated in the brooder boxes. I did try and rotate who was in each box every few days but that didn't seem to help. The one is chashing the others and pecking at heads and the bunch of black one are kind of huddled in a corner in fear i think, because it's plenty warm in there. How long should I give to let them work it our before I intervene, and would anyone have any suggestions? It cracks me up that all the light colored ones seem to be dominant and the darker ones are submissive.
I've got to go out an set up my coop-for-now for my 4 week olds. Luckily they'res only 9, and they've been together the whole time. I'm hoping I'll get pictures so ya'll can help me figure out if I'm right about my pullet/roo ratio.

But first I have to actually go outside.

Apparently they are both heat tolerant and cold hardy. They are supposed to be great foragers too, but we will see. I've been told dark Cornish aren't cold hardy or great foragers, but mine are both. They run around in the snow with all the other chickens and rarely do I see them at the feeder. They have their own little spot in the hay that they have been devouring.

My Basque are very heat tolerant and excellent foragers! I have no idea about cold tolerance because we don't get very low temps in Louisiana. I love this breed!
