I've stopped buying eggs. Swapping is so much more fun and I find I still get what I'm looking for. My girls make enough to buy their feed. I'm hoping to hatch some chicks for the different poultry shows next year and make a bit more money

see madamwlf is doing good and i bet u also have alot of breeds to dont you or are investing in them right?

This year I can't say I made a profit, but I was able to buy EVERYTHING the chickens need, feed, med, you name it, THEY paid for it NOT ME. I could even afford EXTRAS this year. They also made enough for me to BUY some HIGH QUALITY Breeders. And they have already paid for themselves. Next year, barring having to replace my flocks, I should be able to SEE some of that money in my pocket. One way I have saved so much money it I used FREE materials to make coops and my incubator too really. I don't have $100-150 in my bator that hold 540 eggs with an automatic turner. You can't buy all the fancy stuff, build all the expensive coops, buy organic and make any money.

JMHO....

I invested in breeds I wanted but they are also breeds that never go out of style. I have no need to charge big prices for my fancy birds.

If I can take 10 English Orp chicks to a swap and sell them for $20 a piece, I've paid for my original investment. My legbars have paid themselves off, the Tolbunts are on their way. Frankly, the coops, pens and equipment is basically depreciated over years. Got an Accounting degree, so I've got it figured out. I even have layers just for eating eggs and I sell those too.

I can't do organic. There is just no way I could afford the feed and still sell eating eggs cheap. I can't see charging $5 - $6 a dozen for eating eggs.

I invested in all my birds starting at 16 years old i lived on 6 1/2 acres in Okeechobee florida i started collecting chickens then..I watched and seen people buy chickens from my grand father for years.. So by the time i was 21 I had atleast over 27 breeds of chickens.. I basicly had learned that i had to have rare breeds too cause most people look for that in buying chickens cause what are they doing with them? Some people show them, some people have kids that show them and people use them for their eggs, their is much more...my chickens make enough to buy their own feed,,med,,whatever they need..yes i have replaced pens but it dose pay off but it has also took me alot of birds for it to pay off but thats cause i have and addiction and want every breed....As in for my incubator i got one for free and the other me and my brother built out of a refrigerator..I am gonna work on making a thread tonight so it can help or hopefuly tell people what they want to know...

BTW I have lost about 12 birds during this cold snap. Everyone said get them outside, I did, they died
