Thanks everyone for the kind words and letting me brag on a wonderful man.
The worst part of the husband story is how we met - every teens worst dream - my FATHER picked him out and even set up first date!!! Yikes ... Guess sometimes father does know best.

Back to chickens though-does anyone have a chime in on what would be the best breeds for selling hatching eggs that may help me "almost" break even????

Another way to make money is if you have a large incubator and your using it to incubate your own eggs, you can offer incubation services as well. I mean, the incubator is already running, it's not hurting your power bill any.

I'm not set up for that, but it makes sense to me, madamwlf. Except... PAY someone to hatch eggs for me??? That's the best part!!!

Okay, maybe not if you're raising chickens as a business.

I know, I love to hatch. Most times it's cheaper to buy hatching eggs then it does chicks. And if you want good quality you need to buy from a breeder. Not everyone has an incubator or knows how to hatch. I have a friend who has a Brinsea Eco 20 and isn't all that great with hatching. I find what she wants, hatch them for her and charge her a fair price for it all.

I would say Orpingtons are a big hit with a lot of people but you have to pick the right color. Any birds that lay colored eggs: EEs, OEs, even some of the imported breeds. Everyone loves blue and green eggs. EEs and OEs are so popular, you just never know what the chick will look like when it's an adult.

help!!!!! on the third day of incubating, our incubator got unplugged for the night but since it was so early we thought they would be ok. a lady we talked to said to restart the 3 weeks from then so we did. we were going to take them out of the turner today because they were supposed to hatch tuesday. 3 weeks ago was the day we originally set them in the incubator, but like i said we restarted the time. when i went in to take them out of the turner, i heard peeping and 1 had hatched and 2 were pipped. the one that had hatch had a lot of blood on his head and i think he hit the motor of the egg turner. i know you're not supposed to open the incubator but i had to to take them out of the turner. should i take the one chick out and try to clean his wound or something like that? and are all the rest of the eggs ruined? dont know what to do,

i raise and breed mine for buisness, madamwlf is right but i actually havent started doing shipped eggs but have been doing local hatchings for people..

I can tell you what I've seen going for serious cash on ebay, RedBrush Farms: jubilee orpington, chocolate orpingtons, and American bresse (which I'd love to have someday! Not till I get my own place, though -- I don't want to buy hundred dollar birds and risk moving them eventually. But I'd love to see if they're as yummy as people say -- I LOVE chicken! And chickens... lol!) And oddly enough, some vulturine-looking thing that went for like $150 for a half-dozen eggs. No idea what they were but they were scary-looking!

Good-bloodline/moderately rare breeds (BCM, lemon orpingtons, fancy wyandottes, etc) seem to go in the $20-30 range, with everything else being pretty much $20 or less plus shipping.

Oky, so I've done a lot of window-shopping on ebay!

Other than that one marketplace, though, I have no idea of relative prices/values.

I also have others looking for specific breeds. I can usually find them at a decent price, incubate them and charge them a price for the chicks.

So sorry about your loss RedBrush Farm
That is what I do. I will fire up my cabinet in January then start to take orders, whether it is my eggs or their eggs depend on the price. I live in an Amish community and they love this. I offer way cheaper prices the the local hatchery (no names mentioned), this year my friend is going to put an ad in the Amish Farmers Newspaper.

you can pick breeds but remember in those breeds their is also different varieties in those breeds..

Wayne, I do know that experience with one or two hatchery chicks doesn't exactly give me any in-depth knowledge about a breed -- but it at least gives me a sense of the breed/variety for two or three bucks. Oddly enough, of all my hatchery birds the two Delawares are quickly becoming my favorites. They actually WANT me to rub their bellies, pick them up, scratch their backs... The ones I have now are kind of my practice birds, and after eight months I'm feeling a lot more confident in my ability to raise healthy, happy chickens and give them what they need. So now it's time to start getting some "real" ones!

I'll be interested to see how I do with hatching shipped eggs. I'm a little nervous about it, actually!
