Questions for all the turkey people.... 28 days like ducks, right? Higher humidity if possible? No medicated feed? And they need to be with chicks so the chicks can teach them the ropes??? :fl that krazykat's and Profti's eggs hatch this week!!

Just like chickens, but higher humidity if possible during hatch. 28 days is correct. Game bird or turkey starter. They are both medicated. A few chicks will help, but I also foil line a small dish and put their feed on their. I also use very wet feed to start with. Add a few glass beads or marbles to both feed and water. Observe to make sure they are eating. Like really actually picking up food not just pecking here or there.

I guess 3, as well. :)

Brrr....man, it got cold again last night. Luckily was nicer this am, though! Nice enough to knock back most of the snow for the weekend, so we had an Easter egg hunt this morning...ok....we had 8 of them. The boys really, really, really liked finding eggs. They couldn't care less about the Easter baskets. LOL

Such wonderful photos!!! makes me wish I had kids!!!!
Madam my guess is two.

Today was a peculiar day. First I found blood on one of the new Midget hens. One of the toms claws needs to be trimmed. She was torn open from her wing down to a deeper cut into hey thigh. Sigh. This is why I prefer to free range. They wear their beaks and claws down so I never have to go through the pain of trying to trim them. Well we got the poor girl cleaned and sprayed. I opted to cover her with one of my sons tshirts. After cutting holes for her legs and cutting the back so I could tie it she was put back with her pals. I've seen this with my BBWs in the fall. The boys are just too heavy, but with the Midgets I had never had a problem. These guys are still in the greenhouse, so they won't wear those claws down. I'll need to do some trimming. They have been raised in confinement.

Then this afternoon when we went down to the chickens and found one of our hens in a fight with an opossum. Silver is pretty tore up, but she had a heavy jean dress on and I think it saved her life. She was pretty naked and the roosters were cutting her, so we made her a dress from a leg of one of my sons outgrown jeans. She only has one wing which makes mating difficult. She's not kept for breeding. Anyway now she is missing most of the skin off her neck. The poor girl. I brought her up cleaned her and treated her wounds. Dern possum bite her quite a few times with those alligator teeth. I'm keeping Silver up at the house until her wounds are well on their way to mended. What a weird day it was. I'm sure both girls will do fine. I've seen much worse, but two in one day was exhausting. Guess I don't normally see possums out and about at midday, so weird it is.
So sorry to hear...I hope she survives. sounds like she has had a time of it. Thank Goodness you were there to save her!!!

We were working outside yesterday building stuff in the backyard and the **** dog found a nest of baby bunnies. I took the ones I could find from him and put them inside wrapped in a towel in a tupperware. Then every 1/2 hour or so Sigfried would find another screaming bunny that We would have to go rescue from him. We ended up with 5 baby bunnies by the end of the afternoon. I am feeding them egg yolk mixed with milk and a bit of sugar (with a syringe) on the recommendation of the book "wild orphan babies." (eggnog essentially...) Their eyes are open so I don't think they are too young, but their ears are not standing up yet.

Any idea how soon I should give them grass and green stuff?

They will be reintroduced into the wild as soon as they are ready.
(I'm so tired)

Morning all...happy Monday................Happy April Fools day (and all the jokes and pranks that comes with it)

Our new Flemish doe gave birth this weekend........................12 BABIES!!!!! good grief she is an over achiever

doe as in Bunny?

So maybe you know...how old until they can eat real food?
We have these baby bunnies my dog found yesterday. He didn't hurt them but he was way obsessed with the nest so we couldn't put them back. Their eyes are open and they can move around a bit...have good back leg strangth. but their ears are not standing up so I think they aren't ready yet to be out on their own...plus all they want to so is sleep huddled in a pile.

Wild rabbits are different then domestic. I believe wild rabbits leave the nest permanently around 4-5 weeks old.

Baby rabbits stay in the nest for about 4 weeks. They leave the nest when they are about 4" or 5" long and the white diamond shaped patch of fur on their forehead is almost gone. They will also have fluffy fur, their eyes will be open and their ears will stand up away from their bodies. They will look like tiny adults and are supposed to be on their own without their mother. Leave these bunnies alone unless they are injured.

yesterday found my first Norwegian Jaerhon egg and my swedish flowers started laying!

There is nothing weird about Dr. Seuss names.  Love it!  Glad to hear everyone came out at least alive and doing somewhat well.

Thanks. Sure was glad we went down we did. Yup every one looks good this morning. Well not the possum, but my birds are all good.

Need to go pick up some more cages from CL today, so I have more options when needed.

Wish I could find decent cages on CL. Everyone around here wants a fortune for stuff that looks like crap.

oh, excellent info!!! thanks! these guys are so close. their fur is not fluffy yet. all I could find on a cursory internet search was alot of people saying to put them back (not an option...my dog would kill them) and My Aunt was the one that had the book that gave me the formula of what to feed them.
(my family is a bunch of nature nuts...my mom actually runs a nature center at the local ski resort but she's in Germany visiting my Sister right now...so no help there)
