I hatched out some chicks 2 days ago (not mine) and they were gooey- one that I helped out had bubbles/foam- they seem to be doing great. One pooped last night when I got them out of the hatcher and it was clear goo. I had to wash the chicks off before putting them back in the hatcher because I was afraid the goo would make them icky and wings stick in an awkward position. Any ideas why? It was only one particular breed.

The neighbors are at it again. Had a visit last night from the FD Chief last night.  My neighbors called the FD complaining that I was burning "weird stuff" and it smelled.      The "weird stuff" was paper feed bags and things I had raked from part of the yard (leaves, twigs, acorns etc).  He asked what I was burning, I told him. He asked if I had a permit, I do. He then informed me of the complaint, said I was good and advised me not to burn chicken manure (I wasn't, we compost it). This is the third time they've complained (last year and this) and the FD has never found anything.

These are the same neighbors that complained and advised me that "this was their retirement home"  to which I said "and this is my backyard chicken farm".

I think I have the perfect solution!!!

I have wonderful neighbors except for some fishy ones that have really late night deliveries at all hours of the night- I figure the cops will catch on soon. SO.... I am trying to find a way to put my turkeys to be (in incubator) the pasture to free range without me being a huge annoyance to my neighbors. I already added a new buckling that sounds like a dying calf in a hail storm- if he doesn't start shutting up soon I am going to have the cops called on me for torturing poor animals in the barn. We are kind of odd at our farm- 1/2 is city and 1/2 is county. The city part was grandfathered in and so no one can do anything about my animals but, I do try to be courteous.

I may be bias here, but I would strongly suggest considering a turkey for this.  They are also very protective and excellent companions, but they are more gentle with the chickens.  My Tom is my guard turkey.  He has told me about many a suspicious activity around here.  Including three separate incidences when  my neighbor trespassed in the middle of the night.  He is also the reason I have never lost a bird to a predator.  I watched him scare the beejesus out of a pit bull X one time, then I pick him up and cuddled him.  He follows me everywhere.  He even learned to fetch from my dogs, but he is an amazing protector of my birds and property and always a gentlemen with the chicks.

Hummm I have always liked turkeys anyway they are so calm and regal. any particular kind or just turkeys in general?

Turkeys are absolutely amazing. My protector tom is a red bourbon. He sure keeps abnoxious neighbor off my property. I would say one of the bigger heritage breeds. Big enough to be intimidating, and heritage to add the intelligence and energy.
