calling all experts in hatching!!!! Yesterday I had a dozen eggs go into lockdown I had school yesterday so the night before I got them ready. only one had started pipping. Well yesterday morning I'm guessing my dog had rubbed against the table and got tangled in the cord but I woke up to a crash and saw the incubator and all the eggs scattered on the floor. It took me the entire morning to hatch/save the chick that had started pipping early she was bleeding in a few spots but now she's ok. I had to throw out 2 eggs because blood and yolk was oozing out and they were completely crushed. I already know a few more are dead but I have 4 that might make it. They haven't made any noise but from the holes in the air sac part of the shell I can see the membrane moving. I was told they will need help hatching on their hatch day should I do it tonight on the 2nd day of lockdown? Or wait? The shell is ruined on a few I'm worried about the membrane drying

That is a real tragedy, so sorry it happened so close to hatch.

I don't really know the answers for you. Did you try on the incubator thread or a help thread? Maybe I would put a damp paper towel around any eggs that had broken shells and you could see the membrane, might keep it wet enough to allow it to hatch? I wouldn't help early - they still need to pull in the blood and yolk before they can hatch safely.

for the chicks

AC guy just left. Looks like we have a valve that has failed. Now waiting to hear on part and cost.
YEAH...well... kind of... at least you know what is wrong now. Hopefully it doesn't cost much to fix.

Well... probably by the end of this month- middle of May I should have more chocolate orps laying. I have for sure one rooster out of the 4 juvies- he has been crowing for about 2 weeks. I was so excited I took a video of him. I am hoping for 1 roo and 3 hens to add to my 1 roo and 2 hens (separate pens since the older ones are unrelated)

this is the chick I managed to save

If it were me I would make sure the viable ones had a good rescue air hole and then wrap the whole egg with a warm damp paper towel leaving the small air hole open.Keep the humidity high and lightly spray the paper towels with warm water as needed. I would then assist with hatching after they would have hatched on their own.

If you wet the membrane you should be able to see blood in the veins- this can be a good indicator if they are ready to hatch or not. If you see no blood it is safe to assist. Usually when you candle you can see a nice hollow spot after the yolk has been absorbed but based on the condition of those shells I would say go with the veins as an indicator.

Good luck and I'm so sorry you lost the others

The neighbors are at it again. Had a visit last night from the FD Chief last night. My neighbors called the FD complaining that I was burning "weird stuff" and it smelled.

The "weird stuff" was paper feed bags and things I had raked from part of the yard (leaves, twigs, acorns etc). He asked what I was burning, I told him. He asked if I had a permit, I do. He then informed me of the complaint, said I was good and advised me not to burn chicken manure (I wasn't, we compost it). This is the third time they've complained (last year and this) and the FD has never found anything.

These are the same neighbors that complained and advised me that "this was their retirement home" to which I said "and this is my backyard chicken farm".
