Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Hi! Since I only have 10 more days to wait until I can join in the swap - I have a question.

We're only allowed to have 6 hens where we live, but I ADORE hatching eggs and watching the chicks come out - and I love raising them! They're so much fun as babies! I'm wondering if it is allowed on the BYC swap thread to participate in the swap, but hatch the eggs out, raise them to 2 months or so and then sell them or give them away to good homes?? I won't be able to keep the chickens I raise because we already have most of our flock...but I'm still wanting the experience of hatching the eggs and raising chicks just like everyone else.

I wanted to be honest and forthcoming and specify what my intentions are, and ask if it was allowed at the same time. :)

If not, I just won't participate, it's totally fine.

I certainly wouldn't be doing it to make a profit - considering what we pay for the chick starter, the bedding, the grow gel, and everything else they get (they eat better than we do) we already figured we'd be losing money rather than making any, so that's not my motive.

Thanks in advance for any replies!!
Even if your intent WAS to hatch and sell them for a profit, I honestly don't think anyone would frown on it - the only thing I can think of that wouldn't be allowed would be to get swap eggs and then resell them on ebay or something. Now THAT would be really unscrupulous.

Kaftyladies- are the black polish LF or bantam. Been stalking for polish of ANY type for a while. Keep missing tolobunts, but would be happy with any LF Polish at this point. Thanks, Amy:)

Hi Amy,

Those are crazypetlady's polish, I just copied and pasted her post to update the page with her offer. babymakes6 might know if they are.... hopefully one of them will be on soon to answer that question. I would like to say that they are, but I have not talked to her about those in particular.

Thanks, got really excited to see polish not claimed yet.... I always seem to check in after they have been Mined. I'll try to be patient. Trying to make DH happy. He asked for a polish roo at the livestock swap, and I we didn't have room for them that day. How can I turn down my chicken addiction enabler!? :p

I have my brooder pen in the middle of my 8 pens. I hung those drop lights with a 75 watt bulb in each, and faced one in opposite directions towards each end. My pen is 40' long, is that enough light, do you think? The brooder has red heat lamps in there, but they don't give off much light to the surrounding pens. But was wondering if those two 75 watt bulbs will make much of a difference?

I have a single 75 watt bulb over 2 of my breeding pens and it is quite a bit of light. It illuminates both the pens (average 5x12) & still throws light into about 10 ft into the adjoining run (illuminates close to 20 ft width). Mine hangs a couple of feet above the top and almost points straight down. Your setup would likely work great, especially if the lights are not directed straight down.
