Seriously now, can u really put up Christmas lights in the hen house and not have to have timers set to make sure flood light comes on at 3:30 am? Do they prefer colored or white lights:D

I mentioned Christmas lights to my husband, and he just looked at me and said, "Seriously???"

Well, yeah....

They just need 13 or so hours of light. You don't want them on all night ( get a cheap timer) because they will wake you up! I use them at night and not morning because my main coop is under my bedroom window, and peppy chickens at 3 AM sucks. Some people suggest morning is better, however, so they don't get surprise by the lack of light away from the roosts. But mine just roosted in the coop with the lights so it was never a problem.

We used the LEd ones, less electric and no fear of fires. I used rope lighting, not xmas lighting, because my girls liked to try and eat the xmas lights, bad chickens no cookies for you. It took a week or 2 for them to start again, but it worked to start last years pullets laying before spring.

I intend to do it again later in the winter, right now I can't deal with more chicks so no incubations, and I froze a whole bunch of over abundant summer eggs for winter baking, so as long as one of my girls gives me an egg a day, i'm good for reg eating eggs. I want the Marans girls to have a nice long break so I get nice dark eggs in January.

Thanks - sounds like a plan. I'm all for a lower electric bill...

What if I where to more my tractor code to the back porch and turn on the porch light for three extra hours a day? Would that be good enough?

I hate using my phone for typing. It makes my post unreadable sometimes, or at least confusing. I mean, I'm sometimes incoherent on my own, I don't need auto type helping!!

What I MEANT to type was if I moved my tractor coop CLOSE to my porch

I would think it would work as long as you can get some light shining into their coop to wake them up.

Yes, you can go 'correct' things. BUT this is way more entertaining. And, one doesn't even have to open a bottle of wine to get a bit giggle-y

so if I free range my chickens, would they pick on Seremas? I am freeranging all of my chickens and only going to coop them up when I want to collect eggs for chicks.

they are really cute... and she keeps putting them up, and it might be fun to decorate such cute little tiny eggs.
