I hope you quarantined him. Mixing new birds into your flock without a quarantine period is a recipe for disaster...and if someone dropped of a new bird at my place without telling me I would be seriously PO'd. Is that person going to take responsibility for putting your whole flock at risk?

He is lovely though!

Honestly, all the birds I have now are... well, they're my starter birds. I'm not too concerned. If they were the breeders I've got hatching out ;-) it'd be a different story.

And I presented the story the way I did for comedic effect, really. In fact, she'd asked if I wanted a roo and I'd said sure. She'd mentioned week before last she'd drop him by soon, but I'd forgotten about it this morning!

I don't mean to sound rude, but that is a very cavalier attitude to have about lives of your birds. Whether you will breed them or not is irrelevant, it is for the sake of their lives that you should quarantine anything new that comes in. Do a search on here for Marek's or Mycoplasma, or Infectious Coryza and see what comes up. When you are faced with culling/euthanizing all of your birds because ONE brought something in, then you can let us know whether it mattered that they were "starter" birds or not.

I wasn't thinking when I was doing the list this morning (

ME! ) - just kind of on auto-pilot after a long week with little sleep. gabrielle1976 has a very good swapping reputation with many of us here and is cleared to swap unrestricted.

I'll move her to the big list tomorrow night or whenever I do the next update.

Your concern is appreciated, but how cavalier I am and how cavalier I sound are actually two very different things. I tend to like to be light-hearted in public, and presented the story I did in a humorous manner because I thought it might make some people smile.

Yes, there is always a chance of infection. Yes, the bird is now, not entirely quarantined, he's in with my four other Aussies, but they're in a separate area. No, he wasn't in fact a random drop-off; I know her, I know her flock, I know how they're kept, and although that's no guarantee I didn't feel the risk to be extraordinary or unacceptable.

I daresay I will make mistakes as a chicken owner and while good advice politely presented is always welcome, frankly yes, that was really quite rude.

I don't see a "Ditto" button. That was my first and second thoughts exactly. You never know what someone may not know and it takes a risk to try and point out a helpful opinion (based purely on facts, here =:~) I am getting braver at putting myself out there. It seems to comes so easy to some of you.
thanks k/

oooppps Sorry, it takes me so long to get a message done (hire a severe dyslexic and have fun watching us type while thinking
