nothing to debate really, proven fact that carbs produce fat and fat helps keep animals warm

Chickens use feathers, not fat to control body temps. they already are fat, look at cochins!

I think that is what DM is implying, that fat doesn't work quite the same for birds as mammals.

Right, but you said that it is like candy, ect, but yet that is the bulk of what they are getting if that is all that you feed them.

I am sure this can be debated all day and not get us anywhere, so I will stop now.

I don't feed scratch or extra corn... that is what I said. It is in feed they don't need CANDY to fill them up and not eat the feed that was made for them. They NEED the protein especially when molting.

People have feed chickens on just scratch for generations and will continue to, I don't. I use scratch when I need to get the chickens to do something like move into the run while I clean the coop... but I don't feed corn on a regular basis to my chickens. No debating, everyone feeds what they feel comfortable with.... I am not comfortable feeding corn..... this is kinda like the talk about the lettus, same thing basically. Not much nutrition.... in the big picture.

no chickens as well as most other birds dont use feathers to stay warm, they use down and fat reserves

I don't believe the use of corn to keep chickens warm has anything to do with the fat. I think it is the fact that their bodies work to digest it while they are sleeping. This action produces heat in the chicken which keeps them warm. Something along those lines.

That also

Quote: I don't feed bread anymore either.... They really need the balanced diet that is in the feed and we don't need to mess with the science behind the feed and throw it out of balance with junk food.

I don't need fat chickens

LOL never thought of them getting fat till now... They have a whole new layer of feathers for the winter, that is kinda what the molt does this time of year..... nothing warmer than a down coat

Really I am not arguing my point but protein is MUCH harder to digest than starch. I have read tons on feeding chickens, followed up on all the stuff that I read to see what seemed logical to me and what I found was it really is just a myth.... but it is ok if you want to feed corn... not going to hurt them.

Let me try to guess. Blue roo over barred hen? Then the f1 would be blue/black barred roosters and you would breed that to original hen?

Oops I was so wrong!!
