Ours found a piece of paper in their sand this afternoon and acted like it was the coolest thing since mealworms.

I got to it before anybody had consumed it but still...they thought they had found the motherload of treats.

Well what was disturbing and entertaining at the same time is when I found a litter of baby mice. Most of the chickens weren't interested, but it only takes one to grab and run for the show to start. I didn't stay for dessert.

We feed off our excess mice to the chickens. Yes, I breed mice. I have snakes and it's just cheaper and easier to raise my owner feeders.

this is kinda like the talk about the lettus, same thing basically. Not much nutrition.... in the big picture.

Yes :) If you look at what a chicken eats naturally, it's going to be a very varied diet consisting heavily of grass, grains, bugs, with some fruits, veggies, and various foliage thrown in. The idea is to replicate that, or even improve on it. I like the corn basically as a treat, same with the sunflower heads (and partly at least because I can produce those myself). Mealworms are an excellent addition for protein and I have got to get it together to start a mealworm farm. I'm a real nutrition nut -- it runs in the family -- wish the "exercise fanatic" bug did, too, lol! -- so my chickens probably eat a lot better than some people, for the same reason I like growing my own food as much as possible. I can maximize nutrient intake of my veggies and animals so when I eat it, I know I'm getting the biggest nutrient-per-calorie bang for my buck possible, so to speak :)

Corn's like my chickens' Doritos, lol!

But the main thing is simply to make sure they're getting a balanced, sensible diet -- just like with human animals ;-)

What kind of cereal did you offer them? lol

This time is was old Fruit Loops. I've tried different kinds, when it's too old for us. I even crunch it up into little pieces for them. My chickens just don't like cereal. Or maybe it was too old for them, too. So the rest of it went in the trash today.

I know the feeling. My coronations are death on mice literally. I have seen a couple go into their pen and that was their last mistake! They all focused in on them and they all fought over them. Now NONE of my others even bother with them. I had seen these mice go running from me through 3 pens until they hit the coronations. Then that was it!
